I think because life happens, we always have to be loose with the promises we make which gives us flexibility to fulfill the promise without coming at a high cost from ourselves. I also like to say something like I'll do my best to get it done! whenever a promise is asked of me, especially from a loved one.

Exactly. In that way, we aren't obliged to do it except we can and someone won't have to keep waiting thinking it's a promise. We don't have to promise what we can't give.
