The cost of her decision is quite high now as it has somehow capped what she can do after getting married with the love of her life. Love can be an overpowering feeling but it's always good to think about the bigger picture too as situations can change with the blink of an eye.

She lost the opportunity and she is never getting it back cos she lost the one person who was ready to sponsor and even if the mother was alive, she has kids now, she can't possible leave them .
