The Age of Memes +GIFs!

The topic of memes and GIFs is quite interesting because it's part of many people's daily lives. Interestingly, I researched the origin of memes, and the AI-generated answer was: "The concept of a meme originated in 1976 in the book The Selfish Gene by biologist Richard Dawkins. In the book, the author used the term to define any unit of culture—an idea, habit, or piece of music—that spreads, replicates, and evolves among people."

It's interesting that if we think analytically about the origin and compare it to what memes are today, we can see that it hasn't varied much, and there's something more that some people might not realize: the other functions of a meme beyond entertainment. As you may have noticed, in the thumbnail itself I already demonstrated this first concept, which is simply being a way to cheer people up, to bring fun to the environment. The Age of Memes + GIFs!

Starting from the origin of the concept, we notice that memes go far beyond being something funny. In society, memes end up portraying part of the culture. An event that happened in the region, country, or world is depicted with some kind of caricature, serving as a form of criticism and the person's opinion on the event. In this way, memes could be categorized as a form of art, in which people express themselves about an event, someone, or something.

It's quite curious that this issue of memes spreading, like an image, a text, a video, or a GIF, is very viral. When a new meme becomes popular, the tendency is for it to become even more so because it spreads – "that which propagates, replicates, and evolves among people." Nowadays, with social media, memes become trends, and as the concept itself explains, people use them as a topic of conversation, becoming part of society, especially among younger people.

Furthermore, within social media, as memes become trending topics, they end up becoming a subject for influencers to give their opinion and create their own variations of the meme. One of the biggest examples is the dance craze, which starts with one person doing it, and soon after the feed is full of replicas, variations, and becomes part of the entire community. Therefore, as we are more connected than ever, knowing about trends and memes ends up becoming an obligation because it gives meaning to the jokes.

There's such a close connection between memes, the internet, and social media that it seems we're living in the age of memes. You can even see how entire periods can be portrayed through memes. Think of a meme, and you can immediately get a sense of when it started and what your friends were talking about at the time, even though the meme itself had a whole context to emerge.

Overall, I believe that memes and even GIFs make the internet more relaxed. GIFs, for example, make everything more "animated." There are situations that can't be expressed by a single image, and that don't need audio to become a video; a GIF is perfect. An animated graphic, a simple step-by-step guide, multiple uses, and space-saving.

O tema de memes e GIFs é bem interessante porque faz parte do cotidiano de muitas pessoas. Curiosamente, fui pesquisar sobre a origem dos memes e a resposta criada pela IA foi "O conceito meme surgiu em 1976 no livro O Gene Egoísta do biólogo Richard Dawkins. No livro o autor usou o termo para definir qualquer unidade de cultura - uma ideia, hábito ou música - que se propaga, replica e evolui entre as pessoas".

É interessante que se pensarmos de forma analítica na origem e compararmos com o que são os memes hoje em dia, podemos notar que não variou muito, e tem um algo a mais que talvez algumas pessoas não percebam, que é as outras funções de um meme para além do entretenimento. Como você pode ter notado, na própria thumbnail eu já demonstrei esse primeiro conceito, que é simplesmente ser uma forma de alegrar as pessoas, de trazer diversão para o ambiente, esse seria talvez a ideia mais direta que uma pessoa pode ter ao ser questionada sobre: O que é meme? Partindo da origem do conceito, notamos que os memes vão muito a mais do que ser algo engraçadinho. Na sociedade os memes acabam retratando parte da cultura. Algum evento que aconteceu na região, no país ou no mundo que é retratado com algum tipo de caricatura, servindo como uma forma de crítica e da opinião da pessoa sobre o fato. Dessa forma, os memes poderiam ser categorizados como uma forma de arte, em que as pessoas se expressam sobre algum acontecimento, alguém ou algo.

É bem curioso que essa questão do meme se espalhar, como uma imagem, um texto, um vídeo ou um gif, é muito viral. Quando um novo meme se torna popular a tendência é que ele se torne ainda mais, porque ele espalha - "que se propaga, replica e evolui entre as pessoas". Hoje em dia, com as redes sociais, os memes viram tendência e como o próprio conceito explica, as pessoas usam ele como tema de conversa, se tornando parte da sociedade, principalmente entre os mais jovens.

Além disso, dentro das redes sociais, como os memes se tornam assuntos do momento, acaba se tornando uma pauta para os influenciadores darem a sua opinião e criarem as suas próprias variações do meme. Um dos maiores exemplos são as dancinhas, que surgem com uma pessoa fazendo, e pouco tempo depois o feed está cheio de réplicas, variações, vira parte da comunidade inteira. Com isso, como estamos mais conectados do que nunca, saber das tendências e dos memes acaba virando uma obrigação porque dá sentido para as piadas.

É uma ligação tão próxima entre memes, internet e redes sociais, que parece que estamos vivendo a era dos memes. Pode observar que até mesmo períodos conseguem ser retratados por memes. Pense em um meme e logo você consegue ter uma noção de quando ele começou e do que os seus amigos falavam sobre na época, sendo que o próprio meme teve todo um contexto para surgir.

No geral, acredito que os memes e até mesmo os gif deixam a internet mais descontraída. Os GIFs por exemplo, deixam tudo mais "animado". Tem situações que não conseguem ser expressas por uma única imagem, e que não precisa de audio para se tornar um vídeo, um GIF é perfeito. Um gráfico animado, um passo a passo simples, vários usos e com uma economia de espaço.
