Grading System - Do we Need it or Not?

The education system is the basis of society and a country as it is one of the pillars responsible for shaping the next generation that will be responsible for the processes and work in a few years. Among the systems, the best known is that of letters or grades that evaluate the student's performance in that subject, but which can end up leading to a comparison situation that is not good overall.

A model in which it is just a matter of passing or not being notified could be too simple. With that in mind, let's talk about the educational grading system for students, analyzing whether it is really so positive or is it more negative? Is there no middle ground between having and not having this system?

Let's start talking about the educational grading system, first talking about the positive points of having a grading system. The main positive point is the competition and the competitive spirit that can be good for some, encouraging improvement by wanting to be better. The student, when observing that he is in a type of competition with other friends, may end up having the same effect as a traditional competitor who seeks to improve himself to improve his rankings.

However, this is a system that may not be for everyone, as there are students who do not like to compete and even forcing a competitive environment will not help, and may have the opposite effect in which they feel pressured by their friends and the school/system to always improve, even if they have obtained a grade to pass the year, it is not enough as the grade is not higher than that of the rest of their friends in the same class. So, for those who don't like competing, another system may be better.

With this in mind, a simpler system in which it only matters whether or not you passed that subject, can alleviate the anxiety and stress of getting a better grade and the pressure that students face, not to mention the issue of them comparing themselves with others and the shame of being called in front of everyone or their colleagues discovering a negative grade. And as the objective is for the student to learn and not for them to have problems during learning, a calmer model ends up making sense.

The problem is that on one hand the competition can cause problems for some students, on the other just notifying whether it passed or not would end up "eliminating" the motivational factor of the competition that students have. Still, only success is known, those who can overcome failure, without having a basis to compare themselves to, the student may not be aware of how they are doing and where they need to go.

A mixed system could be the solution, aiming to adapt the two positive aspects of the previous models for each student who has better characteristics for each model. You can use the simplicity of the second model, in which grades above X pass and below are failed, adding an optional option for the student to choose whether or not to know the grade. Therefore, anyone who is interested can ask and anyone who feels embarrassed doesn’t need to know.

Dentre os sistemas, o mais conhecido é o de letras ou notas que avaliam o desempenho do aluno naquela matéria, mas que pode acabar levando à uma situação de comparação que não é boa no geral.

Vamos começar a falar sobre o sistema de notas educacional, falando primeiramente sobre os pontos positivos de ter um grading system. O principal ponto positivo é a competição e o espírito competitivo que pode ser bom para alguns estimulando a melhora ao querer ser melhor. O aluno ao observar que está dentro de um tipo de competição com os demais amigos, pode acabar tendo o mesmo efeito de um competidor tradicional que busca se aperfeiçoar para melhorar as colocações.

Entretanto, esse é um sistema que pode não ser para todos, já que existem alunos que não gostam de competir e mesmo forçando um ambiente competitivo não vai ajudar, podendo ter um efeito contrário em que eles se sintam pressionados pelos amigos e pela escola/sistema de melhorar sempre, mesmo que ele tenha obtido nota para passar de ano, não é o bastante já que a nota não é maior do que a do restante dos amigos da mesma sala. Assim, para os que não gostam de competir pode ser melhor um outro sistema.

Pensando nisso, um sistema mais simples em que só importa se passou ou não naquela matéria, pode aliviar a questão de ansiedade e estresse em conseguir uma nota melhor e da cobrança que os alunos tem, sem contar a questão deles se compararem com os outros da vergonha de ser chamado na frente de todos ou dos colegas descobrirem uma nota negativa. E como o objetivo é fazer com que o aluno aprenda e não que ele tenha problemas durante o aprendizado, uma modelo mais tranquilo acaba fazendo sentido.

O problema é que se deu um lado a competição pode causar problemas para alguns alunos, no outro só notificando se passou ou não acabaria "eliminando" o fator de motivação da competição que os alunos tem. Ainda, só que só conhece o sucesso, quem consegue superar o fracasso, sem ter uma base para se comparar o aluno pode não ter noção de como está e de onde precisa chegar.

Um sistema misto pode ser a solução, visando adaptar os dois aspectos positivos dos modelos anteriores para cada aluno que tiver características melhores para cada modelo. Pode usar a simplicidade do segundo modelo, em que notas acima de X passam e abaixo são reprovados, adicionando um opcional para o aluno escolher saber ou não a nota. Com isso, quem tiver interesse pergunta e quem se sentir constrangido não precisa saber.
