Here I am on my bed, scrolling through my social media feeds, I'm struck by the profound impact that these platforms have had on our lives.

Just like my Nigerian people will say, : "everything na sharp sharp" meaning that you get everything as quick as possible,
Instant messaging, real-time video sharing, picture uploads, feeds, reels, even market place, games and a lot more fun thing are being done on social media these days, we have really evolved, thank to the relentless efforts of people and Technology.

Social media has become an integral part of our daily routines, and its monetization has transformed the way we interact, share, and consume information. But it is a thing of concern that While the monetization of social media has created new opportunities for businesses, influencers, and individuals, it also has negative impacts on people. In this post, we'll explore both the positive and negative effects of social media monetization.

Recently in Nigeria we see a rise of content creators, Vloggers ,Bloggers comedians, actors, podcasters and many more are putting their contents all out on the social media platforms, sites and apps like Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok and YouTube are now filled up With a lot of contents, thanks to those platforms.

The answer is very simple: Monetisation.
Monetisation is the process of making money through your content or any other tasks or activities you do on your social media platforms. Activities like views, engagement, likes, gifts and many more are being used as criteria to pay people on YouTube, Tiktok, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
The Monetisation of all the social media platforms bring traffic of content creators, all hungry for the rewards at the end of their contents, but people can get really greedy, fraudulent and do some illegal stuffs to get that rewards hence our prompt for this week.
Is Monetisation a blessing or Big problem.

The monetization of social media has created new opportunities for:

Influencers and Content Creators: Social media platforms have enabled individuals to build a following and monetize their influence through sponsored content, affiliate marketing, and product sales. For example, popular comedian Sabinus, MarkAngel and Brainjotter have built massive followings and earn significant income from their sponsored content.
We also see Small Businesses and Entrepreneur were able to reach a wider audience, increase brand awareness, and drive sales. Many small businesses have successfully leveraged social media to build their brand and attract new customers. Even E-commerce and Online Shopping through Social media has made it easier for people to discover and purchase products online, creating new revenue streams for businesses. Jumia,Temu , Jiji and many others use Platforms like Instagram and Facebook,
The social medias have introduced features like shopping tags and online stores, making it easier for businesses to sell products directly to customers. Finally Digital Marketing and Advertising are very dependent on Social media as a crucial channel for digital marketing and advertising which in turn allows businesses to target specific audiences and measure the effectiveness of their campaigns.

Truly there are lots of benefits of Monetisation but there are a lot of Set back and Negatives.
Let take a look at some of them.

Mental Health Concerns of the audience is being affected through The constant exposure to curated and manipulated content can lead to feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, and anxiety. Many people have reported feeling pressure to present a perfect image on social media, which can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. Unrealistic Expectations from Social media often promotes consumerism, materialism, and unhealthy lifestyles.
Many ladies have resorted into Nudity, only fans, and sexual objects.

Take for example on tiktok:
I have frequently been seeing young girls opening their tops and exposing their Boobs and even go stark naked just for coins and gifts it's such a disheartening sight. The same with men, they look from engagement through posting series of harmful and manipulative contents, influencers drags people into sport betting and other fake products.
One of the most painful acts is seeing popular Afro-beat singer Davido endorsing a fake Ponzi Scheme Racksterli a lot of Gullible Nigerians enter immeasurable debts and depression because of following their song idols. It's so painful.

Data Privacy Concerns, Cyberbullying and Online Harassment, Social media can be a breeding ground for cyberbullying and online harassment, which can have serious consequences for mental health. Many people have reported experiencing online harassment and bullying, which can be devastating, Addiction and Distraction from using Social media can be detrimental to productivity, relationships, and overall well-being. Many people have reported feeling addicted to social media and struggling to disconnect from their devices.

Is Monetisation a curse or blessing?

For Me I would say its a blessing that needs to be used correctly.
The truth is people are just too greedy, Careless and Irresponsible.
If there can be a measure to ensure compliance to the right way of engagement and usage of Social Media, we woul all enjoy More money from all these social media.
