The Art Of Forgiving

Many people preach everyday about the need of having a forgiving heart. True, being able to forgive someone for the ill things they commit is very good as it not only brings peace to our hearts, but it also creates a good relationship with not only the person that offended us, but also, with those that watched the situation.

Though a perfectionist, I have come to the end of myself to realize that no body is perfect, not even me. One special trait we all have is the ability to annoy somebody knowingly or unknowingly. After I realize this, I tend to find this amazing quality to be unique.

This post is not about the unique qualities of humans, however, it is an entry for Hive learners prompt, Forgiving and Forgetting. In this post, I will write on my perspective of forgiveness and forgetting, and also, I would also share a story about me... So, here goes...

I grew up in a not so peaceful area, the north. Civil wars were the order of the day. I remember those days when my kid bro said he saw a human finger on the floor when he went to buy something.

In this type of place, forgiveness is rarely seen as everyone is on high alert, ready to deal with any flaws. The war intensified and we had to flee. That time, Civil war reduced, but the Boko Haram started to terrorize communities and towns.

We came back to the village where every child spoke in insane slangs just to feel among. Cultism was in every corner. People were killing people just to settle their scores. 1-1, 1-0, 2-1.... All these are scores, not for a football match but the amount of death between rival cult groups.

It was really insane. I loved the slangs i heard, but thankfully, I had a very good mentor (who was one of them) that prevented me from joining the accursed group. However, that didn't stop me from learning a lot about these groups, and claiming to be what I was not. lol...

With the mentality of "forgiveness is a sin," I found myself spiraling out of control. I became the beast I despised in my young age. I didn't take any life, but then, i saw and learnt the ruggelity and rascality that were in the streets. tch... time wasted on nonsense.

After dropping all these ugly lifestyle, I began to realize the importance of forgiving. It brings peace to the heart to know that you have let go of all the wrong things somebody did to provoke you.

However, the big question here is: What about forgetting?? When you forgive without forgetting, does that mean you did not fully forgive that person??

One thing i learnt from my village is that, When a fire burns you once, you should not take out your anger on that fire. Instead, you should chill, and be sensible enough to remember the hurt, and learn the lessons that came from that hurt so that the same fire will not burn you twice. If it burns you twice, that means you are foolish. lol...

I don't think the paragraph above actually needs an explanation though but then, i'll go ahead to talk about it. I don't really think that remembering the wrong thing that somebody did to you, means you have not forgiven them.

You can forgive and decide not to come for revenge but then remembering what they did to you and how the entire thing came to play, will give a good insight of how to avoid them so as to prevent similar thing from happening in the future.

Thank you for reading...

One can definitely forgive but the pain is already registered in the heart which can't be erased at all. That pain will serve as a guide for one never to fall in that kind of scenario again

Just like my people would say "Ina eshishi kii joni leemeji" (a fire doesn't burn one twice) though that's if the person is wise like you've said.

It's okay to forgive but there's no way we can forget

Perfectly said. It takes wisdom to understand that one should not allow fire burn them twice. Once should bring good experience on how to avoid the fire.
