With the level of discipline in the genes of African parents, I don't really think that most of them are supportive of child services.
An average African parent will want to flog the stubbornness out of their children. Even though they flog the child until the child bleed, so long as the child don't stop their bad character, the African parent will never stop flogging the child.
I have heard countless stories from friends, about how their parents flog them mercilessly. I have seen where somebody was flogged at the back with the flat side of a Cutlass. Not the sharp side or the side opposite the sharp part, but the flat surface that houses it's designs.
My elder brother was the most stubborn kid in my house back then. It got to a point when my mom flogged him with broom. After she finished flogging him, she began to bring out some broom sticks from his body. He was then sent to the hospital for expert care, but the most important thing to her was that, she disciplined him, and he stopped the bad character.
Now when I think about all these things, I can't help it but wonder, aren't these things going against children's right? Are these disciplines not too extreme? Using Cutlass and broom to flog somebody as if you are delivering the person from an evil spirit.
Had it been child services agents caught wind of these acts, I would have probably not grown up in the hands of my mother. I guess. But then, we actually don't regret being flogged like that because it built us, and made us stronger and more disciplined.
I have not actually witnessed the actions of child services agents in my country, until recently. That should be about a month or two months ago. Most times, I watch about child services in the movie.
Fee months ago, something happened that caught the attention of Abia state child services. Please note, in this story I'm about to share, I will change the names, and locations but I will narrate it as it happened.
Two kids, Adam and Gift were staying with their grandmother in a remote village of Enough. Adam started staying with his grandmother, until Gift joined. Adam was around 10 years old, while Gift was about 14.
Their grandmother made sure that they were well fed irrespective of the fact that she has little to offer. They were both schooling in one of the best schools in that village. Above all, they were well taken care of.
When Gift joined Adam, his attitude began to change from being a good boy that always obeyed his grandma, to being a stubborn boy. Gift stayed with one of her aunty before coming to stay with Grandma. Her aunty complained bitterly at how Gift always love men (at this young age) and she does crazy things and talks a lot of bad things. Grandma still allowed gift to stay cause why not?
After a year or two, Gift and Adam began to grow very closer together. it was seen as a normal thing, so, no much attention was paid to it.
One day, grandma noticed that all the money in her account was removed. After much investigation, it was found out that both kids stole the money from grandma's account.
After much questioning and disciplining, they were allowed to go. About 5 days later, Their elder brother (who was also staying with Grandma) reported with proof that they were trying to poison grandma's food.
Heart broken, grandma questioned them but no tangible answer was given. Trust an African parent, flogging followed. After that day, both children left the house without any hopes of returning. Grandma searched the ends of the village for them without any trace of them. People said that they saw the kids entering a motorcycle.
They were reported as missing, but even at that, they were still not found. After much search, it was reported that the kids were found in Abia state, Umuahia.
There, they were found by a stranger who took them to homeland service of Abia state. There, they twisted the story up side down, and they hid what they actually did. This act painted grandma as the villain, and it made the commissioner there really pissed off at grandma.
When Grandma heard the news, she sent her son to go get the kids, but upon reaching there, her son was arrested and was about to be placed in a cell.
Long story short, child services decided to take the kids away from Grandma because they saw it as child negligence. Without much complaints, it was agreed, but after some contemplations, child services refused to take the kids away from Grandma.
Currently, I the kids are still leaving with their grandmother, though their grand mother don't want them.
One major problem with the child service is that they did not wait to hear the full story from the other person's mouth. They drew their conclusions with what the kids said.
True, children look innocent, but then, some of them are not. Personally, I don't think that any parent deserves to be forcibly separated from their kid. Well, except the child is in a very obvious danger when they stay with their biological parents.
Thank you for reading.
our parents will so discipline us but we have nothing to protected from it. i don't even know that the service existed here.
It does. I guess its not know because they are not creating awareness or something
What you said really remind me of my own experience. When I was still a child, my mother used to flog me a lot. Sometimes I would cry endlessly, but she didn’t stop until I changed my behavior. At that time, I felt like she hate me, but now that I’ve grown up, I understand it was out of love.
The feeling is mutual. Sometimes, you'll feel like you want to run away from the house and go to a far land where nobody knows you. Lol.
I'm really grateful to my mom for all the discipline
Indeed, Parents never wish bad for their children.
I really have to make research on this topics, I had no idea that Abia had a government organisation like that in charge of the welfare of kids. That's good. Although how they handled the case is also shaky. But then, I think seeing how Thier purpose is child-centric, it's understandable that everything they would do will be mostly based on the child's say so. I guess that's why they only listened to the children and not the adults.
They do. Even, Homeland offices is not far from where i live. I do pass there when i'm going to bank road through Flow Fm.
Its actually understandable. Welp, i'm glad that the case has settled.
