The New Jesters
In ancient times, the kings of European courts had jesters whose function was to entertain them. In our days, access to jesters has been democratized and no one needs to be a king or queen to have one, since television provides several specimens, many of whom would do anything to appear on television.
Many people even forget their dignity due to their unhealthy desire to be "famous," going so far as to voluntarily participate in reality shows with quite questionable content.
People are free to do with their lives whatever they want, but sometimes television producers take advantage of people who possibly have serious problems, of one type or another, to get them to expose their lives and even their privacy for a little money, fame, or help.
I haven't watched many reality shows, and I think the only one I used to watch was "Survivor" which, although it had its moments when they humiliated the participants, presented an interesting facet due to the selected locations and the concept of surviving in challenging conditions.
Personally, I consider that some shows of this type only serve to awaken the morbid curiosity of an increasingly alienated audience that seeks trash entertainment at the expense of people who serve as modern jesters to fill their lives.
What is disheartening is that this type of program usually doesn't contribute any value to society; often the messages they transmit are negative for children and adolescents who consider it a lifestyle or a way to become famous.
Although I particularly believe that banning this type of content would be an attack on individual freedoms, I also believe there should be norms and rules about what type of messages and content can be displayed in mass media, because whether we like it or not, that content ultimately shapes individual behavior in a certain way and by extension that of society as a whole.
But as they say in economics, demand creates its own supply, we can say that audiences also foster their own content. If they didn't have good rating levels, they wouldn't have sponsors and therefore wouldn't be broadcast, but reality shows us that they are content avidly consumed by a part of the population large enough to make them profitable.
I only hope that the new parents of the world have better judgment that manages to make children love art and culture, and that they choose good content that adds value to their lives and makes them better human beings, instead of encouraging shows that only serve to either degrade other people for their personal entertainment or distract their minds from real issues and problems that we should pay attention to in order to force politicians to fulfill the functions for which they have been elected: to work for the common good of citizens throughout the world.
