Retiring Is Not the Same as Not Working

I believe many people dream of the day they can retire and finally do whatever they want with their time.

Given that the vast majority of people are doing jobs that don't fulfill them, it's no surprise that anyone with the financial means to leave would do so at an early age.

The saying that goes "choose a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life" sounds great, but it's a reality that not many people get to live.

Unfortunately, I fall into the category of people who never worked at something they loved, though that didn't stop me from doing it as well as I possibly could.

I currently run a small grocery store that provides my daily income, but it's not my dream job either, although it does give me more flexibility than if I were working for a company.

Like anyone who doesn't have their dream job, I dream of the day when I can retire and do with my time what I truly want.

Of course, being able to do the activities one desires implies having what is known as financial freedom, so that there's nothing else to worry about.

One of the things I would do if I were retired and with money in my pocket would be to travel the world to fulfill my dream of discovering different cultures, especially the cuisine of each country I visited.

I don't see myself as a nomad, so I would also like to set up a shelter for abandoned animals on a property I own near Asunción, which is large enough for the animals to have space to play and run around happily.

If money were no issue, I would study veterinary medicine, which is the career I truly would have loved to pursue if I had been able to. I know it's a demanding field, but I would take it at my own pace, as they say around here: slow and steady wins the race.

I don't have too many retirement plans — I think that what I've mentioned, studying, traveling, and running the animal shelter, would be quite enough activity for someone my current age, and I suppose that by the time I'm 55 or 65, I may not have as much energy.

But if I truly wanted to do everything I've described, I'd need to win the lottery or become a member of congress, because my despicable representatives in the Paraguayan congress are planning to change the law — since they have the votes to do so — to allow themselves to retire after a term of just 5 years.

It's mind-boggling how something entirely unconstitutional can be made "legal" when the State is held hostage by unscrupulous thieves and fraudsters.

I imagine Paraguay is one of the few places where a congressperson receives a pension (and this has been happening for years already), when it's supposed to be a labor benefit for workers who typically must contribute for at least 30 years to a pension fund.

And that's not even mentioning the minimum retirement age for ordinary people — as the congresspeople have labeled us — which, as in almost every country in the world, keeps getting pushed higher and higher.

Just to make it clear that I am against the VIP Retirement for parliamentarians: today I signed a public petition that needs 50,000 signatures to even be "considered" by Congress... And yes, I know it's like asking the mice to guard the cheese. But you have to at least try!

Jubilarse no es igual que no trabajar

Creo que muchas personas sueñan con el día de jubilarse y poder por fin hacer con su tiempo lo que quieran.

Teniendo en cuenta que una gran mayoría de personas está realizando un trabajo que no le satisface, no es de extrañar que quien tuviera la solvencia de abandonarlo lo hiciera a temprana edad.

Aquella frase que dice que hay que escoger un trabajo que amemos y así no trabajaremos ni un solo día suena bien, pero es una realidad que no muchas personas pueden vivir.

Desafortunadamente entro en la categoría de personas que nunca trabajó en algo que amara, aunque no por eso dejé de hacerlo de la mejor forma posible.

Actualmente tengo un pequeño negocio de comestibles, que me da el sustento diario, pero tampoco es el trabajo de mis sueños, aunque tengo mayor flexibilidad que si trabajara para una empresa.

Como toda persona que no tiene el trabajo de sus sueños, sueño con que llegue un día en el que pueda retirarme y poder hacer con mi tiempo lo que realmente quisiera.

Claro que el poder realizar las actividades que una quisiera implica tener lo que se denomina libertad financiera, para no tener que preocuparse por nada más.

Una de las cosas que haría si estuviera jubilada y con dinero en el bolsillo sería viajar por el mundo para poder cumplir mi deseo de conocer culturas diferentes, en especial la gastronomía de cada país en el que estuviera.

No me veo como una nómada, por lo que también me gustaría establecer un refugio para animales abandonados en una propiedad que tengo cerca de Asunción, que es bastante amplia como para que los animales puedan tener lugar donde jugar y correr felices.

Si el dinero no fuera problema, estudiaría veterinaria, que es el trabajo que realmente hubiera amado hacer si hubiera podido. Sé que es una carrera difícil, pero me lo tomaría con calma, como se dice por aquí sin prisa pero sin pausa.

No tengo demasiados planes para la jubilación, creo que con los que mencioné y que son estudiar, viajar y cuidar el refugio de animales sería bastante actividad para alguien de mi edad actual, y supongo que cuando tenga 55 o 65 tal vez no tenga tanta energía.

Pero si deseara poder hacer todo lo que les conté, necesitaría ganarme la lotería o ser congresista, porque mis deleznables representantes del congreso paraguayo están planeando modificar la ley, ya que tienen los votos necesarios, para poder jubilarse tras un mandato de apenas 5 años.

Es una locura cómo se puede hacer "legal" algo totalmente inconstitucional cuando el Estado está secuestrado por ladrones y estafadores inescrupulosos.

Imagino que solo en Paraguay un congresista recibe jubilación (está pasando desde hace años) cuando se supone que es una prestación laboral para trabajadores que normalmente deben aportar como mínimo 30 años a una caja jubilatoria.

Y eso sin hablar de la edad mínima de jubilación para las personas comunes, como nos bautizaron los congresistas, que como en casi todo el mundo, se quiere elevar cada vez más y más.

Solo para aclarar que estoy en contra de la Jubilación VIP de los parlamentarios, hoy firmé una petición popular que necesita 50 mil firmas para ser "considera" por el Congreso... Y sí, ya sé que es como pedir que los ratones cuiden el queso. ¡Pero hay que hacer el intento al menos!
