Is learning on the brink of extinction?

It’s often said that experience is the best teacher, and this applies to every field—especially university education. The theoretical learning offered by universities provides a good foundation for what awaits us in the real world, but it doesn’t offer all the experience and skills needed to go out and practice. At least not in every existing career.

In my particular case, practically the only thing I learned during university classes that truly helped me in the workforce were the laws. But that’s something anyone can learn without attending university.

Obviously, I’m not referring to practicing legal defense, but it’s telling how, in my Public Accounting degree, the only subjects useful for working life were those related to laws—labor law and tax law. Beyond that, nothing we were taught was applicable to real work.

I started my degree in 2001, and although it may sound unbelievable, we didn’t have a single class on computerized accounting. Not even learning how to use Excel, pivot tables, or Power BI, which would have been far more useful.

What I’m getting at is that universities are often out of sync with the real world where their teachings would be applied. I imagine there are degrees where theory is the only thing that matters, like in science, mathematics, and others.

Undoubtedly, in certain contexts, having a degree is worthwhile—provided you live in a country where positions and jobs are earned through merit. In my country, this happens at an infinitesimal level, because the harsh reality is that good positions are reserved for those with strong recommendations.

In the public sector, this reality was even acknowledged by the current president of my country, who admitted what we all know: here, it doesn’t matter how many degrees you have, because positions are given to those who work for the [Colorado] party.

So much so that most children, relatives, partners, or lovers of politicians hold high-ranking positions with generous salaries, without even having completed secondary school.

So, if you ask me whether it’s worth sacrificing to earn a university degree in my country, I can say no—unless you’re planning to emigrate to a country that values academic training.

Unfortunately, the universities in my country are all outside the top 100 best universities in the world, which means that the studies obtained here—no matter how brilliant they may be locally—are mediocre on a global scale, or simply not recognized because they don’t meet international standards.

A very representative case is the “garage universities” that offer medical degrees, where most students are Brazilian nationals who study in Paraguay because it’s cheaper than in Brazil—both in tuition and cost of living. But later, when they try to validate their studies in Brazil, they massively fail the exams required for professional registration.

This also shows us that many people are really just after the diploma, as we say here. They don’t care if the teaching or training they receive is mediocre—they’re satisfied with the degree, probably because they already have a job lined up.

Even though the education system has much to improve, it won’t be enough if people aren’t willing to make the effort to learn and strive for excellence. Never before has access to information been so easy, but never before have people’s educational levels been so low.

Which makes me reflect on whether technology is truly helping us—or turning humans into automatons who’ve lost their curiosity and love of learning.

Siempre se ha dicho que la experiencia es la mejor de las escuelas, y esto se aplica a cualquier ámbito, en especial al de la educación universitaria. El aprendizaje teórico que brindan las Universidades es una buena base para lo que nos espera en el mundo real, pero no brinda toda la experiencia y habilidades que se necesitan para salir al mundo y ejercer. Al menos no en todas las carreras existentes.

En mi caso particular, prácticamente lo único que aprendí durante mis clases en la universidad que realmente me sirvió para el mundo laboral fueron las leyes. Pero eso es algo que cualquiera puede aprender sin necesidad de asistir a la universidad.

Obviamente no me refiero a ejercer una defensa legal, pero es anecdótico cómo en mi carrera de Contaduría Pública, las únicas materias útiles para la vida laboral fueron las relaciones a las leyes, tanto del derecho laboral como leyes fiscales. Después, nada de lo que nos enseñaron era aplicable al trabajo real.

Inicié la carrera en 2001, y aunque les suene increíble, durante la carrera no tuvimos ninguna clase de contabilidad computarizada. Ni siquiera aprender el uso de excel, tablas dinámicas o Power BI, que hubieran sido mucho más útiles.

A lo que voy es que, casi siempre la universidad está desfasada del mundo real en el que se aplicaría lo aprendido. Imagino que habrán carreras en las que la teoría es lo único importante, como las científicas, matemáticas y otras más.

Sin dudas, en ciertos contextos, tener un título vale la pena, siempre que vivas en un país en el que se acceda a los cargos y empleos por méritos propios. En mi país esto pasa a un nivel infinitesimal porque la cruda realidad es que los cargos y puestos buenos, son reservados para quienes tengan buenas recomendaciones.

En el sector público esta realidad fue incluso manifestada por el actual presidente de mi país, quien confesó lo que todos sabemos: en este país no importa cuántos titulos tengas, porque los cargos se los dan a los que trabajan por el partido [Colorado].

Tal es así, que la mayoría de los hijos, parientes, parejas o amantes de los políticos tienen grandes cargos con altos salarios, sin necesidad de ni siquiera haber terminado el ciclo secundario.

Entonces, si me preguntan si en mi país vale la pena sacrificarse por obtener un título universitario, puedo responder que no, a menos que tengan en mente emigrar a otro país que valore la formación académica.

Lamentablemente, las universidades de mi país están todas fueras del top 100 de mejores universidades del mundo, lo que hace que los estudios obtenidos aquí, por más brillantes que sean localmente, en el mundo son mediocres, o simplemente no reconocidos porque no cumplen los estándares de otros países.

Un caso muy representativo son las universidades garage que ofrecen la carrera de medicina, en la que la mayoría de los estudiantes son de nacionalidad brasilera, que cursan estudios en Paraguay porque es más barato que en Brasil, tanto los aranceles como el costo de vida. Pero luego, una vez que quieren homologar sus estudios en Brasil, se aplazan masivamente en los exámenes para obtener registros profesionales.

Esto también nos demuestran que muchas personas lo que realmente quieren es el cartón como decimos aquí. No les importa que la enseñanza o la formación que puedan adquirir sea mediocre, les basta con el título, porque probablemente tengan garantizado un puesto laboral.

A pesar de que el sistema educativo tiene mucho por mejorar, esto no será suficiente si las personas no quieren realizar el esfuerzo de aprender y buscar la excelencia. Nunca el acceso a la información fue tan fácil, pero tampoco nunca los niveles educativos de las personas fueron tan bajos.

Lo que me hace reflexionar sobre si la tecnología realmente nos está ayudando o está convirtiendo al ser humano en un autómata que perdió la curiosidad y el amor por aprender.
