I Plead Guilty

I plead guilty to not having basic knowledge of first aid, and until reading this week’s topic, I hadn’t realized how important it truly is.

It’s genuinely negligent that basic first aid and CPR techniques aren’t taught in schools as mandatory subjects.

I mean it seriously—especially considering that during my primary and secondary education, I had classes where we were taught to embroider or draw, for example!

So much time wasted on knowledge far less important compared to First Aid.

In fact, being a bit dramatic, I believe it should be especially mandatory for people who have young children.

Just the other day, I saw two news stories about small children choking on food or candy. In the first case, the parents were lucky enough to reach a Volunteer Fire Station in time, and to have a vehicle that allowed them to get there quickly.

In the second case, they were even luckier, because it happened during a school activity when a little girl started choking on a piece of candy. One of the teachers noticed what was happening and, with a swift movement, performed the correct maneuver to clear the child’s airway.

It’s incredible how many deaths from accidents like these could be prevented if first aid were a required subject, and if we all had the skills to handle these situations that occur so frequently.

As for CPR, my father has a funny anecdote, you could say. It happened maybe forty years ago, when we lived at my grandmother’s house in Asunción.

News arrived that a neighbor’s father had died, and the wake had already begun. My dad went over to the house, since we lived less than two blocks away.

They told him what had happened, and since it hadn’t been too long, he decided to try what he called a “heart massage.”

Well, to everyone’s astonishment and disbelief, the “dead” man sat up and found himself lying on a table in the middle of the wake.

The man lived for several more years, but let’s just say it wasn’t really his time to die that day. My dad was nicknamed “El Manosanta” in the neighborhood for quite a while, until the story lost its novelty.

This curious tale shows us that we could all save lives if we had basic first aid knowledge—and that often, tragedies happen more due to negligence than to fate.

So, dear friends, the topic proposed by the #HiveLearners Community should serve as a wake-up call for those of us who, like me, know little about it—because it’s extremely important, even vital. Who’s to say it won’t be us choking on food one day, unaware that with a simple chair we could perform a maneuver that might save our own life—or that of someone we love.

Me declaro culpable de no poseer conocimientos básicos de primeros auxilios, y hasta la lectura del tema de esta semana, no había tomado conciencia de la importancia de este tema.

Es verdaderamente negligente que las maniobras básicas de primeros auxilios y de reanimación cardiovascular no sean enseñados en los colegios como materia obligatoria.

Lo digo en serio, teniendo en cuenta que durante la escuela primaria y secundaria tuve clases en las que nos enseñaban a bordar o a dibujar, por ejemplo!

Cuánto tiempo desperdiciado en conocimientos tan poco importantes en comparación con los Primeros Auxilios.

Incluso, siendo un poco exagerada, creo que debería ser especialmente obligatorio su conocimiento para las personas que tienen hijos pequeños.

El otro día, viendo las noticias ví dos casos de niños pequeños asfixiados con comida o golosinas. En el primer caso, los padres tuvieron la suerte de llegar a tiempo a una estación de Bomberos Voluntarios, y de tener un vehículo con el cual poder llegar a tiempo.

En el segundo caso, aún tuvieron más suerte, porque estaban en una actividad escolar cuando una niña se empezó a asfixiar con un caramelo. Una de las maestras notó la situación, y con un rápido movimiento ejecutó la maniobra adecuada para despejar las vías respiratorias en niños.

Es increíble la cantidad de muertes por accidentes de este tipo se podrían prevenir si los primeros auxilios fueran una materia de conocimiento obligatorio, y todos tuviéramos la habilidad de resolver este tipo de situaciones que ocurren muy a menudo.

En cuanto a la maniobra de RCP mi padre tiene una anécdota graciosa podría decirse. Esto ocurrió hará unos cuarenta años atrás tal vez, cuando vivíamos en la casa de mi abuela en Asunción.

Llegó la noticia de que el padre de un vecino había muerto, y ya lo estaban empezando a velar. Mi papá fué hasta la casa en cuestión, ya que vivíamos a menos de 2 cuadras de distancia.

Le comentaron los hechos, y como no habían ocurrido hacía demasiado tiempo, se le ocurrió hacerle lo que él llamó un masaje cardíaco.

Lo que sí, ante el asombro y perplejidad de todos los presentes, el muerto se incorporó y se descubrió encima de una mesa en pleno velorio.

El señor vivió unos años más, pero digamos que porque no era realmente su hora de morir aquel día. A mi papá lo apodaron en el barrio por un buen tiempo "El Manosanta" hasta que el asunto perdió novedad.

Esta curiosa historia nos da la pauta de que todos podríamos salvar vidas si tuviéramos los conocimientos básicos de primeros auxilios, y que muchas veces, las desgracias ocurren más por negligencia que por fatalidad.

Así que queridos amigos, el tema propuesto por la Comunidad #HiveLearners debería servirnos de llamada de atención en el caso de que como yo, no sepamos del tema, porque es sumamente importante, y hasta vital, porque quien dice que no seamos nosotros mismos los que nos estemos asfixiando con comida y no sepamos que con una silla podemos ejecutar una maniobra sencilla que podría salvarnos la vida, o la de nuestros seres queridos.
