Holiday Celebrations

There are as many reasons to celebrate as we can imagine, but Christmas celebrations for me are strictly family affairs.

To celebrate with friends or colleagues, there are other more suitable occasions in my way of thinking.

That's why, for as long as I can remember, we have always spent Christmas and New Year's holidays with family.

For us, it's about sharing special dates like Christmas and New Year's with family, and we don't need grand and ostentatious celebrations to be happy.

Well, to be honest, these dates haven't been very happy since my brother passed away. Empty places at the table are much sadder on special occasions.

Despite that, we try to maintain the Christmas spirit even though it's difficult. If it were up to me, we wouldn't prepare anything special anymore and would spend it like any other day, but through a kind of tacit agreement we try to make life continue as normally as possible.

Gone are those days when Christmas was magical, not because of the gifts or the food, but because we were all together and we were happy and didn't yet know that happiness doesn't last forever.

Meanwhile, I see that people who are lucky enough to have their entire family alive don't spend the holidays together.

Many people prefer to go out with strangers and drink themselves into oblivion as if fun were found in excess.

Others choose to travel, taking advantage of the time off to visit another city or another country.

But almost everyone forgets the true meaning of these Christmas holidays, whether because society has turned them into a frantic consumerist race in which one must buy, spend, and splurge.

If Jesus ever existed, he would surely feel somewhat indignant about the misuse that has been made of his supposed birth date, which is undoubtedly what people think about least.

That said, you can probably guess that on Christmas and New Year's I won't have any plans other than having a pleasant evening with my parents and our pets, and hoping that the neighbors won't be as annoying as they usually are.

But that would be like expecting pigs to fly, because nowadays, people aren't happy unless they make a lot of noise to show they're content, or at least pretend to be.

Because in this society what matters is appearing rather than being, and that makes these Christmas holidays lose their true essence and meaning, making gifts and new clothes much more important than moments spent with family.

That's why my New Year's wish for the world is that they remember what Christmas is about and not waste their energy and money buying objects they don't even know will be liked, but instead invest in spending good times with their loved ones, as that time will always be treasured and valued.

Fiestas Navideñas

Hay tantas razones para festejar como podamos imaginar, pero las celebraciones navideñas para mí son estrictamente fiestas familiares.

Para celebrar con amigos o colegas hay otras fechas más propicias a mi modo de pensar.

Por eso y desde que tengo memoria siempre hemos pasado las fiestas navideñas y de fin de año en familia.

Para nosotros se trata de compartir en familia las fechas especiales como Navidad y Año Nuevo y no necesitamos grandes y ostentosas celebraciones para estar felices.

Bueno, para ser honesta, no es que estas fechas sean muy felices desde que falleció mi hermano. Los lugares vacíos a la mesa son mucho más tristes en fechas especiales.

A pesar de eso intentamos mantener el espíritu navideño aunque sea difícil. Si fuera por mí ya no prepararíamos nada especial y lo pasaríamos como un día cualquiera, pero por una especie de pacto tácito tratamos de hacer que la vida continúe lo más normal posible.

Atrás quedaron esos días en los que la navidad era mágica, no por los regalos o por la comida, sino porque estábamos todos y éramos felices y aún no sabíamos que la felicidad no dura para siempre.

Mientras tanto, veo que las personas que tienen la suerte de tener a toda la familia viva, no pasan las fiestas juntas.

Muchas personas prefieren salir con extraños y alcoholizarse hasta perder la conciencia como si fuera que la diversión estuviera en los excesos.

Otras optan por salir de viaje aprovechando el tiempo libre para conocer otra ciudad u otro país.

Pero casi todas olvidan el verdadero sentido de estas fiestas navideñas, ya sea porque la sociedad las han convertido en una frenética carrera consumista en la cual se debe comprar, gastar y derrochar.

Si Jesús ha existido alguna vez, de seguro se sentirá un poco indignado por el mal uso que se le ha dado a su supuesta fecha de nacimiento, en la que sin dudas es en lo que menos se piensa.

Dicho esto, podrán adivinar que en Navidad y Año Nuevo no tendré otros planes que no sean tener una velada agradable junto a mis padres y nuestras mascotas, y esperar que los vecinos no sean tan molestos como habitualmente suelen ser.

Pero eso sería como esperar que los cerdos vuelen, porque hoy en día, las personas no son felices si no hacen mucho ruido para demostrar que están contentas o al menos pretender que lo están.

Porque en esta sociedad lo importante es aparentar antes que ser, y eso hace que estas fiestas navideñas hayan perdido su verdadera esencia y significado, haciendo que los regalos y las ropas nuevas sean mucho más importantes que los momentos para pasar en familia.

Por eso es que mi deseo de fin de año para el mundo es que recuerden de qué se trata la Navidad y que no pierdan sus energías y dinero en comprar objetos que ni siquiera saben si gustarán y mejor inviertan en pasar buenos momentos junto a sus seres queridos, que ese tiempo siempre será atesorado y valorado.
