The prompt from the #hivelearners community #w182e3 reminded me of the novel Before the Coffee Gets Cold, which I read a couple of years ago, because its plot revolves around time travel. I won’t say more about it in case someone is currently reading it, or might want to read it later—which I highly recommend, as it genuinely invites reflection while allowing us to enjoy the stories the author shares.

Now, returning to the topic at hand, the idea of time travel has been explored in fiction many times, and it seems to be a theme that obsesses more than a few people, at least as a source of inspiration for literature and film.

I admit I often find myself thinking about things like: what would’ve happened if I had done this instead of that, or how my life would be if my parents hadn’t made certain choices. I think we all have some episode in our lives we’d like to change.

The truth is, rather than being an opportunity to do things better, it’s a fantasy that would tie us to an idea that doesn’t benefit us at all—the idea of changing destiny, the past, or the future.

I’ve said before that our present isn’t made solely from our past actions, but comes from much further back in time and involves many people. We exist in this universe because a series of people in the past made a series of decisions.

But let’s suppose time travel becomes technically possible in the future, and we could do it as many times as we want, without restrictions on altering the future—unlike in the Back to the Future saga with Michael J. Fox. In that case, I think we might get stuck at a certain point and live in a kind of loop until we achieve the desired outcome, which would cause stagnation rather than progress.

Undoubtedly, life would become an endless repetition of events that might never lead us to that desired future, because every small action triggers a reaction, and we can’t predict the outcome. So it’s possible that the change wouldn’t be favorable or desirable.

In summary, I believe something like that would mostly cause harm—or at least stagnation—in most people’s lives. It would also generate more spontaneous and unreflective events, making our lives emptier, thinking we can fix things if they go wrong by going back and trying something different.

That’s why I appreciated the premise of Before the Coffee Gets Cold, which, rather than being a way to change the present, is more a way to change ourselves internally—something we can do without needing to travel through time.

La consigna de la comunidad #hivelearners #w182e3 me trajo a la mente la novela "Antes de que se enfríe el café", que leí hace un par de años, porque en ella la trama gira en torno a viajar en el tiempo. No diré más sobre la misma por si alguien la estuviera leyendo en este momento, o por si quisieran leerla más adelante, lo cual recomiendo porque sinceramente ayuda a reflexionar a la par de disfrutar las historias que nos relata el autor.

Ahora, volviendo al tema en cuestión, la idea de viajar en el tiempo ha sido explorada por la ficción en muchas ocasiones, y parece ser un tema que obsesiona a más de una persona, al menos como tema de inspiración para la literatura y el cine.

Reconozco que a mí siempre se me da por pensar cosas del estilo, qué hubiera pasado si hubiese hecho esto en lugar de lo otro, o cómo sería mi vida si mis padres no hubieran hecho esto, y así, porque creo que todos tenemos algún episodio que nos gustaría cambiar en nuestras vidas.

Lo cierto es que más que ser una oportunidad de hacer mejor las cosas, es una fantasía que nos aferraría a una idea que no nos beneficiaría en nada, que es la de cambiar el destino, el pasado o el futuro.

Ya en otra oportunidad he dicho que nuestro presente no está hecho solamente de nuestras acciones pasadas, sino que viene de mucho más atrás en el tiempo, e involucra a muchas personas. Estamos en este universo debido a que una serie de personas en el pasado tomaron una serie de decisiones.

Pero supongamos que el viaje en el tiempo sea una realidad técnicamente posible en el futuro, y que podamos realizarlo cuántas veces queramos sin restricciones sobre modificar el futuro como había por ejemplo en la saga de "Volver al futuro" con Michel J. Fox. En este caso, creo que podríamos estancarnos en un punto y vivir una especie de bucle hasta que obtengamos el resultado esperado, lo que nos haría estancarnos en lugar de avanzar.

Sin dudas, la vida sería una repetición infinita de eventos que posiblemente no nos lleve jamás s ese futuro deseado, porque cada pequeña acción conlleva una reacción, y no podemos predecir cuál será el resultado, por lo tanto es posible que ese cambio no nos sea favorable o deseable.

En síntesis, creo que algo así causaría más que nada daño o al menos estancamiento en las vidas de la mayoría de las personas, y también generaría más eventos espontáneos y sin reflexión que haría nuestra vida más vacía, pensando que la podemos modificar si sale mal, volviendo al pasado e intentando algo diferente.

Por eso, me gustó el planteamiento de la novela "Antes de que se enfríe el café", que antes que ser una forma de buscar cambiar el presente es más bien una forma de cambiarnos interiormente, lo cual es algo que sí podemos hacer sin necesidad de viajar en el tiempo.
