Before and After

Before and After

The world is constantly changing, and with it, so are we. Even the smallest shift makes it impossible to say with absolute certainty that we are the same as we were 15 or 20 years ago. We can’t even pretend to be the same as we were a year ago—or a month.

And although the essence may remain, the form often changes, because we’re also subject to what society expects from someone of a certain age. We can’t behave as if we were still 20, no matter how young our hearts feel. And even if we wanted to, at 45 or 55, we might not have the energy to do so.

Life events change us, whether we like it or not. Going through serious or traumatic experiences inevitably transforms people. It’s hard to remain the same after such events.

And it’s not only tragedy that changes us—good things do too. The joys life brings also shape us.

Change isn’t always bad, especially when it improves what came before. But sometimes, we lack the luck or strength to extract something positive from the stones life throws our way. Because truthfully, life is more cruel to some than to others.

Believers say these are tests to strengthen character, faith, or divine purpose. But what kind of messed-up God would give you trials that might break you—or make you stronger?

Some will say we must accept what life brings and keep going. But what if someone doesn’t want to keep going—why should that be wrong? Aren’t we supposed to have free will, according to some religions?

Life unfolds for everyone, and each of us faces a different destiny. As human and social beings, we are the sum of our experiences, and that must leave a mark.

So yes, we’ve all changed—some more, some less—but we all do. Otherwise, we’d be automatons stuck in our programming. And despite what social media, gurus, coaches, and motivational speakers try to sell us—that we can all become the best version of ourselves—it’s not that simple.

The world changes. Societies change. Technology changes. Politics change. So it’s naïve to think we, as human beings, won’t change too. After all, science has shown that we are the sum of our genetic and cultural inheritance, our social context, and our lived experiences.

As the lyrics of a song sayÂč:

The sun changes in its course
When the night still lingers
The plant changes and dresses
In green come spring

The beast changes its fur
The elder changes his hair
And just as everything changes
That I change is no surprise
