Hello Hivers, Today I am here to talk about an important topic which I don't just talk about online but also in my real life. Did you know I got in trouble because of my passion to make people understand the value of a cent?

image.png

Screenshot of Google converter

So, once an uncle came to visit us. He put his money on top of the refrigerator. While taking the money when going out, a coin of 1 rupee dropped. I saw he didn't pick him up. I ask him, why? He said it was just one rupee. He showed disrespect to the smallest unit and that got me triggered. I said, "Those who don't value 1 rupee, don't deserve many rupees." A simple talk between us was reported to my family later that night.

I said this statement in my flow but my family argued later in the night that the person was jobless and was looking for a job. You shouldn't have said it. To me, it was just me being me. Leaked footage of that night (jk):

SOURCE

This wasn't all, once I went to the photocopy shop and the guy charged me 5 rupees for 2 pages although it should be 4. He would have given me 1 one rupee back but he choose violence ;). So what happened was, I forgot to take my 1 rupee back and went home. When I was visiting the same place for groceries on the same day and reminded him of my one rupee, the guy tried to bring me to shame by saying it's just 1 rupee and you come this far just to take your 1 rupee back. Oh, boy he committed the crime of disrespecting money.

I said: "When I come to you, you sit up from the comfortable chair and smile at me. You pull the machine up, put my paper inside, and press some buttons. Why you do hustle for 1 rupee profit? Looks like you understand the value of money. Why is this even a question about me coming back to take my 1 rupee?"

Another example is when samosa was of 3 rupees and I pay 5 rupee coin, they don't return me my 2 rupees while they also don't get 1 rupee advantage and give 2 samosas in 5 rupees. Here you can see it was 25% of my purchase. If they don't give 1 extra then why I give 1 or 2 more? Also, in Pakistan we usually don't go to buy groceries for one month so it's like me visiting same shop 3-4 times daily while being out for other reasons. It's our culture to visit shops alot of times as mostly if someone is making a biryani they will remember that masala pack is not available just before 5 mins. So yes we will have to go to shop if we don't want a world war just to buy one item. Due to culture difference while this issue don't make sense to some, it's a real issue in Pakistan. Also, it's not be just arguing with random people but with someone we see alot of times in day and we know they are just using candy selling strategy on us.

SOURCE

That's not all, I don't like the 49, 99, and 149 price trends. When you ask for your 1 rupee back they never give you. Happened a lot of times with me. Whenever we fill petrol in our vehicles the price is mostly 99 by design. Why that matters? Cause when you have 1 rupee less they will treat you like you are a leech but when you ask for your 1 rupee back you are also a leech? Logic left the chat.

SOURCE

Another time a grocery shopkeeper made a habit of giving me candies for my coins. If I would have bought candies with my own will then that's another matter. But forcing me to have candies is not the best thing to do with me. I tried to argue but he didn't give me my rightful coins. I saved up his candies for a week and then bought items with candies. Ya, I was giving candies as a medium of exchange. He can't argue anymore cause he himself treated candies as a medium. All he wanted was an increase in sales but he was playing a net zero game with me. Of course, he learned his lesson and now he never tries to give me candies.

SOURCE

What are your thoughts about 1 cent? Do you take it back or let it go? Would you dare to try to take my 1 cent when I am morally and ethically the owner of it? Let me know your stories where you try to take your things back from someone. The comment section is all yours.

First: I loved this post. I agreed with a lot of it but had a bit of a different viewpoint.

I decided to write a counter post here and hope you take a moment to see a different viewpoint.

I'm sure I broke some rule for posting comments or something. If so please let me know what proper etiquette would be for next time.

Your and me have 100% same thoughts. There were not ALOT different in any in my opinion. As English is my second language, my approach was some what stingy but you changed it from

"What is a robber take your one penny
......", My thoughts and ideologies were same but you crafted them better in your words. Making me realize, I tried to be better but there was a need for improvement. I wrote after half or full month. I think my writing skills gets in the way along with being not a native English speaker person.

Although we have different view points on either it's worth it to defend what is mine just cause it's a small amount. I don't fight for my penny, I fight against this ideology or culture of stealing alot of pennies one by one from all customers and the culture of requesting your penny back as something wrong. There are any injustices to fight against in today's society. In Canada we have a round up / round down system. If an item is 7.57 we pay $7.55 (round down). If it is $7.58 we pay $7.60 (round up). In the Philippines they round to the nearest peso (2 cents) even though they have coin as low as 10 centavos (0.2 cents or about 1/15th of a rupee). In practice only grocery stores get the very small denomination coins--the regular stores can't give them out. Not because they are stingy but because getting small coin is hard and only done at major banks which aren't always nearby.

So, in Canada or Philippines it is not an issue.

However, there are many many other issues to fight for. I applaud anyone who fights for what is right!

As a side note.... Maybe make a joke next time someone tries to charge you 100 rupee's for a 99 rupee item. I was thinking how I'd handle it in Canada:

Shopkeeper "That will be 99 rupee's"
Me "Here is 100"

When I don't get my change....

Ahh, I noticed I didn't get my change. Guess inflation is going up and the price is now 100. Are you going to change your signs anytime soon? If its too expensive to change your signs I have a cousin who do it for you for cheap :)

Then I smile knowing I've shamed him for being too cheap to change the signs while not arguing about paying the higher price so I'm not cheap myself.

.....

Words are fun sometimes.

Have a great day

And I really enjoyed your post.

Hope you don't mind that I put my response as a new post.

We don't have a one cent or two cent coin anymore in Australia, they phased them out back in 1992.

Items are still priced and charged to 0.99 cents for marketing purposes but they round it up or down at the register depending on method of payment.

So, one item at 0.99 would be charged at $1.00 if paying cash and $0.99 if paying by credit card. (Rounded to the nearest five cents.)

An entire shopping cart of groceries would be rounded up or down to the nearest $0.05 also, each item is not rounded up or down.

It sounds weird, but that's how it works here.

I used to put all my 1 and 2 cent coins in a tin and take them to the bank to change into notes once full. I actually do that with all coins to be honest, I hate having coins in my pocket. When I go to other countries I tend to have a small money pouch that I put coins into for day to day use but in Australia I avoid carrying them altogether. Here, if I have coins in my pocket, after buying something, I off-load them into a little container in my vehicle then transfer them to my coin jars.

It sounds weird, but that's how it works here.

In Pakistan, If we use any online payment method, we get our 1 rupee back. So, it's just the cashier being lazy here.

I used to put all my 1 and 2 cent coins in a tin........

@galenkp I have a lot of coins like 3000-5000 at least. I used to make coin art. For example, I can write your name someday.

I once saw a person on Fiver having gigs that he does with couple's names. I collected coins but never got any orders. Still, I continued to practice with names. Maybe one day, I will write A-Z with coins and upload a digital version so anyone can write any letter or name digitally with coins. I know it doesn't look too special but I have seen people doing this. Most importantly, it's a relaxing and medication exercise as it requires precision and patience.

Coin art huh? I don't think I've ever seen any coin art except for some trench art from World War One made using coins. I'd like to se some.

Pre-1982 pennies have .03usd of copper in them.
Finding one triples your money.
Nickels are worth .06usd.
A 20% gain.
I'm saving mine so I can take them to mexico and sell them for scrap.
I'll be rich!

I learnt something from this, I should not disrespect Money even if it is the smallest unit. Making payments with candies seems funny when we arenโ€™t in the trade by bata era,but thatโ€™s wisdom.hopefully I try this in my country too. Thanks for sharing.

Your point is valid but arguing with the shopkeeper for 1 Rupee is useless as they dont have coins with them, so mostly we settle with rounding up. Honestly speaking, shops nearby are of known persons and they do give discounts and sometimes, leave 1-2 rupee at our end and sometimes, we have to do vice-versa, that how it works here for me.
But for shopping at big stores, I never use cash just because of .99 and 159 such prices, it is better to pay through card / POS machine which deduct the actual amount from our account.
I still have many coins in my drawers which I use to count after every 3-4 months to change them into notes.

0.07167553 BEE

arguing with the shopkeeper for 1 Rupee is useless as they dont have coins with them

I am a soft teddy bear from inside. When I argue, I know the shop keeper is just being greedy for 1 more rupee. So I don't force them magically make coins appear, I know they have in their storage. They are just not returning to sell another candy.

0E-8 BEE

hahaha that is so cruel and yes, this thing should get stopped. After all, money is money even it is about 1cent. The person who works hard all day understand the true value of each and every penny. On the other hand, if a person is short of 1 cent then shopkeeper don't leave that single penny on him.
You have shared the reality but honestly speaking, people don't take this thing seriously at all.

This is an issue here too but i am a peace promotor and won't like to start an argument or any bad blood because of that amount, so most time, i become the sacrificial lamb by either not asking for it or collect whatever they gives me in exchange for that small change, we spend naira here so that would be 5 naira and ten naira change

0.07004427 BEE

So will fight on behalf of sacrificial lambs that's how the world works. :)

I have coins from America, Qatar, Kuwait, Philippines, old Pakistani coins, and some more in my collection. When I was young whenever a guest came from abroad I showed them a collection and interest, they usually add one new coin to my collection. That's how it works hehehe

Those who don't value 1 rupee, don't deserve many rupees.

I also believe it. And those people who don't give value of money face difficulties in life sooner or later. I have seen some examples in my real life.

Another time a grocery shopkeeper made a habit of giving me candies for my coins.

I also have encountered the same situation. I think it is a Candy selling strategy and get benefit from candy also at the same time.

I saved up his candies for a week and then bought items with candies.

I have planned for it many times also but never did it. And my little brother eat all the candies.

I think every single cent is matter for us. I would prefer to give that cent to a beggar rather then giving it to shopkeeper. I know that the beggar knows the value of it..

I am the youngest in my family so YES, I can eat other cadies and they can't usually eat mine nor are they r interested in that. Works for me.

1 cent if left alone will compound and it's clearly reflected in those instances you left your candies to accumulate so you can buy something tangible.

To me every cent matters, here in Nigeria, almost all stores have similar design of 99 in products for sale, indirectly asking the customers to leave the change for them. Just like the illustration you gave at the beginning, your uncle ignored 1 rupee , forgetting that it can compound to get something tangible. I have been given all these sugary sweet in exchange for my 1 cent but most times, I refuse ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚, why forcing me to buy what I didn't plan all because you want to pocket my 1 cent. I only accept to have those sugary sweet if they search very well for my change without success ..

That's the way to go. I also do this just failed to deliver most of my thoughts properly. I didn't count cultural differences and forgotten people have different economic systems. Brazil is cool is this regard. If it's 99 they will only charge 95. They round off to 5, not the nearest but what benefits the customer most. I learned a lot from this heated blog. It's good that I wrote and people bombarded me with different opinions and especially brazil ones.
