An elderly man in the village was sitting among a group of people, sharing a story from his life. Two years ago, a girl in his neighborhood married of her own free choice. The young man was from a respectable family, well-educated, and employed, yet the girl's brothers did not approve of the match. When they refused, the boy and girl went to court and got married. Instead of returning to the village, they settled in a small flat in the city. The groom was already working in an office there, and after a few days, the bride started teaching at a private school.
In this way, a year passed happily and peacefully. But the villagers could not tolerate it.
All three brothers joined together and summoned their sister back home. When that ill-fated girl arrived at her parents' house full of joy, her brothers locked her away.
The elder fell silent after saying this much, his gaze fixed deeply on the ground.
"What happened next?"
Seeing him so quiet, a young man asked. The old man took a heavy sigh and spoke:
"Well, then the decision was made, the very same decision that is always made on such occasions."
"The girl's eldest brother called me and said that our sister has fallen ill, and we are arranging transportation to take her to the hospital."
"Then what happened?"
This time, another companion asked.
The old man lowered his eyes and replied:
"Nothing! That girl is no longer in this village today. She was not sick, nor was there any need for transportation. It was simply a monster named 'honor' that took her life and left the entire village in mourning."
Respected readers! That single sentence from the old man pierced my ears like a venomous sting: "A monster named honor!"
If you reflect upon it, you will realize this is no isolated incident. It is a recurring tragedy that claims hundreds of young men and women every single year. We ourselves nurture this tragedy, inflating it until we have created a bizarre, agonizing knot in our collective existence.
Respected readers! I truly fail to understand what kind of honor this is, in the name of which a father brutally slaughters his daughter, a brother his sister, or a husband his wife, and it is deemed "justified."
And an even bigger question is this: how have we convinced ourselves that destroying a human life brings back our lost respect?
Yet our collective behavior is such that in most of these cases, the killer is elevated to the status of a hero in society. He is treated with respect even behind bars. He is cheered as a "son of a lion" and a "man of honor." People go out of their way to visit him.
What kind of societal moral compass is this, where the murderer becomes a hero while the victim is forgotten without a trace?
Can someone tell me whether this is merely the flaw of an "ignorant," "conservative," and "rural" society, or is it the product of a deeply organized, obsolete mindset? Because this mindset has grown so formidable that it has infiltrated our laws, our police force, and our judicial system.
Pick up the newspapers today and see how often such killers are granted leniency in the name of "societal pressure."
How many times do we read that "the matter has been settled amicably between the two families"?
Who is the real criminal here? Is it the person who pulls the trigger or wields the blade?
No! The real criminal is the mindset that hands him that weapon. The mindset we have fed and raised across generations. The mindset that views a woman as a piece of personal property. The mindset that instills the belief that a man possesses the inherent right to decide the life and death of a woman.
Why are politicians so silent on this issue? Is it because it is considered a "sensitive" topic? Or perhaps because it represents a "blow to tradition"? And not everyone possesses the courage to speak against age-old traditions. But what kind of traditions are these anyway? The ones that wrap utter brutality in a cloak of sanctity?
Respected readers! I invite you to reflect deeply. Take a moment to think about this subject with genuine seriousness, and tell me: have you ever tried to look at the human faces hidden behind these news stories?
Imagine that father who ends his daughter's life with his own hands. Is there only anger in his eyes? Or behind that rage, is there also a paralyzing fear of society that forces him to commit such an atrocity? Is he himself not shattering inside from that unbearable pain?
And what about that sister or daughter who, in her final moments, sees a knife in the hands of her own father or brother? What is in her eyes? Is it just terror?
No! There is a deep, soul-shattering question in her eyes: "What did I do wrong? Was it loving someone? Was it living life on my own terms?"
It is as though we have drawn thick drapes over our hearts, labeling them as "honor." Beneath those drapes, as bodies continue to fall, we hear neither their agonizing screams nor see their spilled blood. We simply sit in dead silence with our ears covered.
So what do we do? Will this brutal cycle continue forever?
Not under any circumstances! We must break it. And this transformation begins with one simple action: asking questions.
When someone claims "it was a matter of honor," boldly demand: Which honor? Whose honor? For whom? Did that honor magically return after the murder? And was there truly no other path left except the savage act of killing?
Respected readers! We must teach our children, especially our sons, that true dignity lies not in taking a life, but in saving one. We must make our people realize that our lives belong to us, they are not sacrificial tokens for someone else's "personal honor"!
At the same time, those in power must approach this issue with absolute seriousness and enforce the law without compromise. Every such murder must be prosecuted as outright murder, regardless of whatever label or title is slapped onto it.
Remember this! The hand that takes a life in the name of honor tears apart its own claim to humanity. Anyone who commits such an act is nothing more than a cold-blooded killer and a monster, and a monster can never be a hero in any society.
