The Illusion of Completing Education

Furqan was standing tall in the corner of the office. He looked very handsome in his clean and crisp attire. The MBA degree was shining in the file he held in his hand.

I asked: "Have you read Ibn-e-Insha's travelogue 'Dunya Gol Hai (meaning: The world is round)'?"
He looked at me with surprise, as if I had spoken in a strange language:
"Sir! My studies are finished. Now I have to do a job."

Hearing this sentence, I fell into thought. Does study really end as soon as a degree is obtained?
Is there an age for acquiring knowledge?

Dear readers! Do you know that on average, a person in Pakistan does not even read one full book in a year, while in Japan this rate is five books per year?
Have you ever thought that perhaps this is the difference that separates us from developed nations?
I asked the Vice Chancellor of a private university about the reading trend among their graduates.
He gave a tragic answer:
"80 percent of our students never read a book in their lives after graduation."

How is this possible, friends? Is it that we study for 16 years but do not learn how to read, or should we say that we scan books for 16 years only out of necessity, and that necessity is the degree, which is a guarantee of a job?

A researcher says that every person should read at least two new books a month, otherwise they will fall behind in their field. On the other hand, we are such that as soon as we get a degree, the doors of knowledge are seemingly closed.
Do you know that in today's era, the half-life of knowledge is only two and a half years, meaning every two and a half years, half of your knowledge becomes obsolete and old. If you do not read continuously, in just five years your knowledge will have become completely outdated, and sometimes it will even be in the opposite direction of the current times.

The Culture of Reading and Knowledge

A big businessman told me that reading is common in his establishment. When asked how this happened in today's era, he said that we create a passion for reading among our employees.
But how?
So he replied:
"We give every employee a monthly allowance of 2,000 rupees for books. The only condition is that they present a summary of one book every month."
This is very necessary. Why is it necessary? Because just as our body demands food daily, similarly our brain is also a seeker of knowledge daily. But we have made our brains addicted to fast food. Short posts on social media, WhatsApp statuses, TikTok memes; these are the junk foods that are hollowing out our minds.
Have you ever considered why our educational institutions are failing? Because they give degrees but cannot give the passion for knowledge. They give diplomas, but cannot awaken the hunger and longing for knowledge.

A tragedy is also that we have linked knowledge with employment, whereas real knowledge is that which broadens your thinking, changes your perspective, and refines your personality.

Once, there was an educational session with a few young people. During the conversation, I asked them:
"When was the last time you read a book that was not directly related to your work?"
Believe me, silence fell over the gathering.
So, dear readers! Why should I not say that sir, this is the problem. We have made knowledge a market product; anything that does not provide immediate benefit is useless in our eyes.
But remember, history is witness that only those nations progress that respect knowledge. What a peak era of our civilization it was when the libraries of the city of Baghdad were filled with millions of books, and almost the same was the case with other countries and cities. And what is our condition today that in the entire nation, there is hardly any house where 50 books are present.

The Crisis of Intellectual Poverty

Dear readers! Put your hand on your heart and tell me, is this not a tragedy?
I understand that these are the most difficult circumstances, but my religion teaches that a person should not lose hope in any situation, therefore, despite all this, I am not hopeless because I have also seen the hope of dawn. I have seen that a change is coming in the younger generation. They are understanding the nature of the matter. New libraries are opening in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, etc. Book clubs are being formed. So friends, can we cure this national disease? Can we reawaken the thirst for knowledge within ourselves?
I think yes!
We just have to work a little harder.
What should we do?
First of all, make it mandatory upon yourself that I will definitely take out at least 30 minutes daily to read any book. Along with this, buy books and slowly build a small library in your home. Initially, read books related to your work and then gradually read books that are not directly related to your work.
Also, do not keep this passion limited to yourself but also create a passion for reading and book-reading in your children from childhood.

A Lifelong Commitment to Learning

Dear readers! My request is that today, decide that you will not let your last degree be the final one.
Decide today that you will remain a student for life.
Remember! Knowledge is such an ocean that has no end, and the one who dives into it is the one who gets true and real pearls. And an empty mind is not only the home of the devil but also a warehouse of poverty.

تعلیم مکمل ہونے کا مغالطہ

فرقان دفتر کے کونے میں تن کر کھڑا تھا۔ صاف شفاف لباس میں وہ بہت ہینڈسم لگ رہا تھا۔ ہاتھ میں پکڑی فائل میں ایم بی اے کی ڈگری چمک رہی تھی۔

میں نے پوچھا:"کیا آپ نے 'ابن انشاء' کا سفرنامہ 'دنیا گول ہے' پڑھا ہے۔۔؟"
اس نے تعجب سے میری طرف دیکھا، جیسے میں نے کوئی عجیب زبان میں بات کی ہو:
"سر! میری تو پڑھائی ختم ہو گئی۔ اب تو نوکری کرنی ہے۔"

یہ جملہ سن کر میں سوچ میں پڑ گیا۔ کیا واقعی پڑھائی ڈگری ملتے ہی ختم ہو جاتی ہے۔۔؟
کیا علم حاصل کرنے کی کوئی عمر ہوتی ہے۔۔؟

قارئین کرام! کیا آپ کو معلوم ہے پاکستان میں اوسطاً ایک شخص سال میں ایک کتاب بھی مکمل نہیں پڑتا جبکہ جاپان میں یہ شرح پانچ کتب سالانہ ہے۔۔؟
کیا آپ نے کبھی سوچا کہ شاید یہی وہ فرق ہو جو ہمیں ترقی یافتہ قوموں سے الگ کرتا ہے۔۔؟
میں نے ایک پرائیویٹ یونیورسٹی کے وائس چانسلر سے پوچھا کہ آپ کے گریجویٹس میں پڑھنے کا رجحان کیسا ہے؟
انہوں نے ایک المناک جواب دیا:
"ہمارے 80 فیصد طلباء گریجویشن کے بعد زندگی بھر کوئی کتاب نہیں پڑھتے۔"

یہ کیسے ممکن ہے دوستو۔۔؟ گویا ہم 16 سال تک پڑھتے ہیں مگر پڑھنا نہیں سیکھ پاتے یا پھر یہ کہیے کہ ہم 16 سال بھی ایک مجبوری کے تحت کتابیں کھنگالتے ہیں اور وہ مجبوری ہے ڈگری، جو کہ نوکری کی ضمانت ہے۔۔؟

ایک محقق کا کہنا ہے کہ ہر شخص کو مہینے میں کم از کم دو نئی کتابیں پڑھنی چاہییں، ورنہ وہ اپنے شعبے میں پیچھے رہ جائیں گے۔ دوسری طرف ہم ہیں کہ ہمارے ہاں تو ڈگری ملتے ہی علم کے دروازے گویا بند ہو جاتے ہیں۔
کیا آپ جانتے ہیں کہ آج کے دور میں علم کی نصف زندگی محض ڈھائی سال ہے، یعنی ہر ڈھائی سال بعد آپ کا نصف علم فرسودہ اور پرانا ہو جاتا ہے۔ اگر آپ مسلسل نہیں پڑھیں گے تو صرف پانچ سال میں آپ کا علم مکمل طور پر پرانا ہو چکا ہوگا بلکہ بسا اوقات تو وہ اس زمانے سے مخالف سمت میں ہو چکا ہوگا۔

مطالعہ اور علم کی ثقافت

ایک بڑے کاروباری نے بتایا کہ ان کے ہاں مطالعہ عام ہے۔ جب ان سے پوچھا گیا کہ آج کے دور میں یہ کیسے ہوا تو انہوں نے کہا کہ ہم اپنے ملازمین میں پڑھنے کا شوق پیدا کرتے ہیں۔
مگر کیسے۔۔؟
تو انہوں نے جواب دیا:
"ہم ہر ملازم کو ماہانہ 2 ہزار روپے کی کتابوں کا الاؤنس دیتے ہیں۔ شرط صرف یہ کہ وہ ہر مہینے ایک کتاب کی سمری پیش کریں۔"
یہ بہت ضروری ہے۔ کیوں ضروری ہے کیونکہ جس طرح ہمارا جسم روزانہ خوراک مانگتا ہے، اسی طرح ہمارا دماغ بھی روزانہ علم کا طلبگار ہوتا ہے۔ مگر ہم نے تو اپنے دماغوں کو فاسٹ فوڈ کا عادی بنا دیا ہے۔ سوشل میڈیا کی مختصر پوسٹس، واٹس ایپ کے اسٹیٹس، ٹک ٹاک کی میمز یہ وہ جنک فوڈ ہیں جو ہمارے ذہنوں کو کھوکھلا کر رہی ہیں۔
کیا آپ نے کبھی غور کیا کہ ہمارے تعلیمی ادارے کیوں ناکام ہو رہے ہیں؟ کیونکہ وہ ڈگریاں تو دیتے ہیں مگر علم کا شوق نہیں دے پاتے۔ وہ ڈپلومہ تو دیتے ہیں، مگر علم کی بھوک اور تڑپ نہیں جگا پاتے۔
ایک المیہ یہ بھی ہے کہ ہم نے علم کو روزگار سے جوڑ دیا ہے حالانکہ حقیقی علم تو وہ ہے جو آپ کی سوچ کو وسعت دے، آپ کے نظریے کو بدل دے، آپ کی شخصیت کو نکھار دے۔

ایک مرتبہ چند نوجوانوں کے ساتھ ایک تعلیمی نشست ہوئی۔ میں نے باتوں باتوں میں ان سے پوچھا:
"آخری بار آپ نے کب کوئی ایسی کتاب پڑھی تھی، جس کا تعلق براہ راست آپ کے کام سے نہ ہو۔۔؟"
یقین مانیے محفل میں سناٹا چھا گیا۔
تو قارئین کرام! پھر میں کیوں نہ کہوں کہ حضور یہی تو مسئلہ ہے۔ ہم نے علم کو بھی گویا مارکیٹ کی مصنوعات بنا دیا ہے، جو چیز فوری فائدہ نہ دے وہ ہمارے نزدیک بیکار ہے۔
مگر یاد رکھیں تاریخ گواہ ہے کہ وہی قومیں ترقی کرتی ہیں جو علم کو عزت دیتی ہیں۔ کیا تو ہماری تہذیب کا وہ عروج کا دور تھا جب شہر بغداد کے کتب خانے لاکھوں کتابوں سے بھرے ہوتے تھے اور قریباً یہی حال بقیہ ممالک اور شہروں کا تھا۔ اور کیا آج ہماری حالت ہے کہ پوری قوم میں شاید ہی کوئی ایسا گھر ہو جہاں 50 کتابیں موجود ہوں۔

فکری پسماندگی کا بحران

قارئین کرام! دل پر ہاتھ رکھ کر بتائیے کہ کیا یہ المیہ نہیں۔۔؟
میں یہ سمجھتا ہوں کہ یہ مشکل ترین حالات ہیں مگر میرا دین سیکھاتا ہے کہ انسان کو کسی بھی حال میں مایوس نہیں ہونا چاہیے، لہٰذا ان سب کے باوجود میں مایوس نہیں ہوں کیونکہ میں نے امید سحر بھی دیکھی ہے میں نے دیکھا ہے کہ نوجوان نسل میں تبدیلی آرہی ہے۔ وہ معاملے کی نوعیت کو سمجھ رہے ہیں۔ لاہور، کراچی، اسلام آباد وغیرہ میں نئی لائبریریاں کھل رہی ہیں۔ بک کلب بن رہے ہیں۔ تو دوستو کیا ہم اس قومی بیماری کا علاج کر سکتے ہیں۔۔؟ کیا ہم اپنے اندر علم کے پیاس دوبارہ جگا سکتے ہیں۔۔؟
میرا خیال ہے ہاں!
بس ہمیں کچھ مزید محنت کرنی ہوگی۔
کیا کریں۔۔؟
سب سے پہلے تو خود پر لازم کریں کہ روزانہ کم از کم 30 منٹ کوئی بھی کتاب پڑھنے کے لیے ضرور نکالوں گا۔ ساتھ ہی کتابیں خریدیں اور آہستہ آہستہ اپنے گھر میں ایک چھوٹی سی لائبریری بنائیں۔ ابتدائی طور پر اپنے کام سے متعلقہ اور پھر رفتہ رفتہ ایسی کتابیں بھی پڑھیں جو آپ کے کام سے براہ راست متعلق نہ ہوں۔
نیز یہ شوق خود تک محدود نہ رکھیں بلکہ اپنے بچوں میں بھی بچپن سے ہی پڑھنے اور کتب بینی کا شوق پیدا کریں۔

زندگی بھر سیکھنے کا عزم

قارئین کرام! میری گزارش ہے کہ آج یہ فیصلہ کریں کہ آپ اپنی آخری ڈگری کو آخری نہیں بننے دیں گے۔
آج ہی طے کریں کہ آپ زندگی بھر طالب علم رہیں گے۔
یاد رکھیں! علم ایک ایسا سمندر ہے جس کی کوئی انتہا نہیں اور جو اس میں غوطہ زن ہوتا ہے، وہی سچے اور حقیقی موتی حاصل کر پاتا ہے۔ اور خالی دماغ شیطان کا گھر ہی نہیں غربت کا گودام بھی ہوتا ہے۔
