I think that the problem with why some men normally bend their principles for women is because they pedestalize them. They have a scarcity mindset which makes them feel that they should be thankful to be dating a woman like that. It's completely normal to think that your woman is amazing and vice versa, but it's good to still note that you're both lucky to have each other. They're not too good for you, and neither are you for them. You're both the prize, and should be lucky to have each other.

From the same place I read about that of a man, it also said, most women, if not all, would never give up their happiness for a man. To some sense, it is true but I leave it to you to decided what you think is true.

I think I've come across something similar myself. The author was contemplating the pathetic irony that men sacrifice their happiness for the women they love, whiles women sacrifice men for their happiness. Like you said, it's a delicate matter, but it probably holds some truth.
