EN-PT A Never-Ending War: When Conflicts Move to the Digital World

We are living in times of great tension! The world seems to be reorganizing its commercial relations among countries. Changes are very fast and sometimes we are surprised by abrupt shifts, breakups, and unexpected alliances. The world has changed, relationships have changed, and everything has become more immediate.

In the same way, friendships between countries evolve rapidly, or decline just as quickly. When we wake up in the morning, a misunderstanding or a disagreement may have turned into a reason for war. And a war now, on a global level, could be the end of humanity.

To avoid this, governments with access to technology could expand their military actions in order to minimize the use of human troops on the battlefield. Currently, the wars most highlighted by the media show us the constant use of unmanned vehicles, the Drones. With them, pilots remotely control weapons that can cause great destruction, without any risk to their physical integrity.

A natural advancement for these armed conflicts will be the use of artificial intelligence. We can only assume that this type of technological tool is not yet being used for military purposes. Let us be naïve and believe that current wars are not being sustained by the most modern systems in the world.

For countries with access to this technology, everything seems to be going very well. But for underdeveloped, third-world countries, will there be any chance? Will there be an actual war or just an extermination of the poorest?

I believe that when there are two military powers with access to the use of artificial intelligence for dispute purposes, reality will no longer be the battlefield. The battles will be fought in the digital world. There will be no need to send robots or machines, as it would be enough to strike the opponent’s digital systems and thus eliminate all risk.

In my view, there would be no more deaths, no more weapons, no more visible dispute in the real world. Just a silent war that would be fought between autonomous systems, in a true never-ending war.

But do not be mistaken, because at no point did I say that we would be in better conditions.

On the day war becomes virtual, and when someone finally breaks through their opponent’s defenses, they will take control of their systems and be able to cause much more damage, without leaving the comfort of their home.

Power plants, payment systems, banks, everything that will be managed by future AIs will be susceptible to the control of the winner of the virtual war that will be fought on internet servers, and will have viruses, trojans, and firewalls as instruments of war.

One command, and a country could be erased, systems shut down, traffic made chaotic, and the entire population will suffer. Then we will reach the point where it will no longer be necessary to use people to fight wars. Machines will fight for us, and decide for us. Whether these decisions will be correct, I believe not. But only time will tell who is right.

Meanwhile, what we can do is hope that leaders avoid conflicts and manage to continue leading their nations with a view to what is best for all peoples.

Estamos vivendo tempos de muita tensão! O mundo parece se reorganizar em suas relações comerciais entre os países. As mudanças são muito rápidas e por vezes somos surpreendidos com alterações bruscas, rompimentos e alianças inesperadas. O mundo mudou, as relações mudaram, e tudo se tornou mais imediato.

Da mesma forma, as amizades entre os países evoluem rapidamente, ou decaem rapidamente, quando acordamos de manhã pode ser que um desentendimento, um desacordo, acabou se tornando um motivo para guerra. E uma guerra agora, em nivel mundial, poderia ser o fim da humanidade.

Para evitar isso, governos com acesso à tecnologia poderiam expandir suas ações militares de forma a minimizar o uso de tropas humanas no front de batalha. Atualmente, as guerras com mais destaque na mídia nos mostram o uso constante de veículos não tripulados, os Drones. Com eles, pilotos controlam de forma remota as armas que podem causar muita destruição, sem que exista qualquer risco para sua integridade física.

Um avanço natural para estes conflitos armados será o uso de inteligência artificial. Nós só podemos supor que esse tipo de ferramenta tecnológica ainda não está em uso para fins bélicos. Sejamos ingênuos e acreditemos que as guerras atuais não estão sendo mantidas pelos sistemas mais modernos do mundo.

Aos países com acesso à essa tecnologia, parece que tudo anda muito bem. Mas para países subdesenvolvidos, do terceiro mundo, será que haverá alguma chance? Haverá um guerra de fato ou apenas um extermínio dos mais pobres?

Eu acredito que quando houver duas potências bélicas com acesso ao uso de inteligência artificial para fins de disputas, a realidade não será mais o campo de batalhas. As batalhas serão travadas no mundo digital. Não haverá necessidade de enviar robôs ou máquinas, pois bastaria atingir os sistemas digitais do adversário e assim eliminar todo o risco.

Na minha visão, não haveriam mais mortes, não haveriam mais armas, não haveria mais disputa visível no mundo real. Apenas uma guerra silenciosa que seria travada entre sistemas autônomos, em uma verdadeira guerra sem fim.

Mas não se engane, pois em nenhum momento afirmei que estaríamos em melhores condições.

No dia que a guerra se tornar virtual, e quando alguem finalmente vencer as defesas do seu adversário, tomará o controle dos seus sistemas e será capaz de causar muito mais dano, sem sair do conforto de sua casa.

Usinas elétricas, sistemas de pagamento, bancos, tudo o que for gerenciado pelas futuras AIs serão suscetíveis ao controle do vencedor da guerra virtual que será trava nos servidores de internet, e terão vírus, trojans, firewall como instrumentos de guerra.

Um comando, e um país poderá ser apagado, sistemas desligados, trânsito caótico, e a população toda irá sofrer. Então chegaremos ao ponto que não será necessário usar pessoas para lutar em guerras. As máquinas lutarão por nós, e decidirão por nós. Se essas decisões serão acertadas, acredito que não. Mas só o tempo dirá quem tem a razão.

Enquanto isso, o que podemos fazer é torcer para que os governantes evitem os conflitos e consigam seguir liderando suas nações com vistas ao melhor para todos os povos.
