I Lowkey agree with you but let's also look at it from this perspective what if he actually goes to school but ventures into doing something negative because he was not interested in going in the first place??

You are right, it's all about individual choices and how we utilize that time. A gap year can be a change for whatever we want it to be.
Exactly if you want it to be a breather then it will be but if you want waste time, your choice as well
