I'm incredibly grateful for how our education system evolved post-apartheid. During apartheid, specifically black students suffered. Bound by the "bantu education act" that basically meant black children only had access to sub-par education. The idea behind t was sickening, really. It was designed to keep the black population from growing and thriving and it subjected so many to the reality that they would never get into University or obtain valuable careers. There was a massive uprising as students went on a peaceful strike in 1976 - also known as the Soweto Uprising, where students were petitioning against this completely unfair act. Apartheid police opened fire on unarmed children. We commemorate them and their sacrifice that heled to reshape our country by celebrating Youth Day as a national public holiday, every year.
That's really sad to know, it's sad that situations like that have to happen before big changes are made in our world.
