My country; the good, the bad and the way forward

Nigeria my country. A nation known as the giant of Africa, a beautiful land with so many beautiful and natural resource. In my nation, the citizens are warm, friendly, and very hard working set of people who stand out wherever they find themselves.

All over the world Nigerians are known to shine and are never the last. Holding reputable positions in different nations of the world. We’ve been through thick and thin but above all else, we always find a way to survive. Maybe because we are docile but we are also die hards. Never giving up on our dreams, fighting and hoping for a better Nigeria someday.

A lot is going on here. From the good to the bad and the ugly. Well a lot of good and vice-versa. Before we talk about the one good thing that had happened lately, I must say that it’s worthy of note to know that amidst all the chaos and seemingly endless speculation of a better Nigerians that I must commend the youths of my country.

It’s so beautiful to know that a lot of youths are rising and doing something for themselves in different areas such as content creation, Learning AI skills, tech, Real Estate and different fields instead of waiting for the government to come around that has always been a good thing Nigerians are known for. The doggedness and resilience to grow has always been commendable.

Well, from the news of late I heard something that gladden my heart. The news that Dangote Group has just signed a $400 million deal to speed up its massive refinery expansion, which could reshape Nigeria’s fuel landscape and create jobs.
Now that’s good news.

Well, when I initially heard of the intentions of the Dangote group to open a refinery in our beloved country before its actual materialization, I was taken aback. I was bewildered on how one man can successfully run am such a Herculean project while the entire government of the nation has successfully failed to get our refineries to work.

What’s the sense in mining crude in one’s country and then export it to be processed outside of our nation only for it to be imported back to us. What’s the big deal with having working refineries in this country. Well corruption is the big deal. And the government weren’t even ashamed to fight him. They wanted to close up the refinery. Such a shame.

Corruption has so eaten into the fabrics of our nation that we only seem to have the effect of the canker visible to all. Corruption has done more harm than good. The last time I went to a filling station to buy fuel, dangote filling station was selling cheaper than a whole NNPC, that’s abysmal.

Well, thank God the job opportunities this move will create in the country and the small respite it will bring to the citizens of our dear country.

On the other hand I must say that I am saddened by the idea that our beloved country has chose to tax every of its citizens. I beg to differ but this country is so wealthy and blessed to that it can provide for its citizens without laying extra burdens on them.

If only we have the guarantee that we will get good returns of investment on the tax maybe we won’t be bothered but how can we know.

A way forward would be for the government to become accountable to its citizens. They’ve promised so much but had delivered so little. If only they can leave greed and put the well being of the citizens of this country as a priority, use the resources for what is meant for and not hoard it for their generations unborn, then maybe the giant of Africa will arise again.
