Investing and Building on Hive: Squeezing the Most Out of Practically Nothing!

This morning, I found myself going around in one of those very long sequences of clicks we invariably end up in, as web browsers... except this all took place within Hive's borders.

The beginnings of growth

It all started because I was exploring PeakD's "Snaps" short form portal, where I came across a couple of mentions from people who were getting various small "drip" amounts from their holdings of Hive-Engine based tokens.

For some, it came from being liquidity providers in pools, for some it was the result of delegating their "tribal" tokens, for some the drips came from simply buying "investment" type tokens that pay dividends.

I already have a little bit of stake in a couple of the latter:

There's the EDSI (formerly EDS) token of which I own a little and get about 0.110 Hive once a week; there's the INCOME token which sends me a drip of about 0.005 Hive daily; there's the well-known BRO token which sends me about 0.009 Hive weekly.

None of this amounts to very much, but it all adds up to something when you factor in time; a bit like a leaky faucet dripping into a bucket: Watching the drops seems meaningless and insignificant, but if you come back this time tomorrow, there's actually a glass of water for you to drink.

Whereas I am a big fan of Hive-Engine and the way people can build their own tribes and communities and projects, I have a slightly uneasy relationship with what I call "tribal tokens;" the ones that are allegedly rewards offered up — with their own individual tokenomics — on communities' own free standing front ends.

Perhaps the most visible and famous that comes to mind is Inleo... but there are dozens of others.

My uneasiness lies in the reality that many of these "others" seem to be short lived, even if their supporting tokens persist.

Consider, for example, that this very account was created around the premise and promise of the PALNet community — the oldest token based community, going back all the way to the legacy chain — which long since stopped being about life as a posting community; so I ended up switching the the VYB community; but its front end went AWOL; subsequently I pursued the POB community and associated token... and both of those front ends have stopped working.

But I still have the tokens. So what now?

So part of my journey was to discover that there's still something I can "do" with my staked POB tokens, namely delegate them to @pob.voter in exchange for getting another stream of weekly drip payments. I delegated 8,800 POB tokens, and we'll see how much that ends up earning.

Normally, I wouldn't do that, but absent a fre-standing front end to curate from, I'd just as well let someone else who knows what's happening behind the scenes manage the tokens.

Similarly, I discovered that there's a @bee.voter account I could delegate my Hive-Engine BEE tokens to, and also earn a small weekly drip. Now, there is still an active front end at tribaldex.blog but I have found myself short on time to check and curate content there.

Of course, one of the benefits to delegating your Hive-Engine tribal tokens is that they can effectively end up doing "double duty" for you. Since it doesn't matter where you vote, some of your Hive voting power will always get used up... and if you were to try to maximize your tribal curation rewards across — lets say — five different communities, you'd soon enough end up with your Hive voting power reaching the teens and 20's.

Hopefully, this will turn out to be a decent approach to putting thse various bits of tokens to use, without having to actually sell them and potentially get very little for them.

We'll see how it all turns out... I'll probably report back on the results after 3-4 months, when there's a bit of a track record established.

Thanks for sharing! This kind of information is far above my head as I don’t know where to read up on this topic and follow what’s happening. So, some tokens have already ceased the front ends. There should be a list of things that still live and survive!
