Things were slick in Indy!

It's been quite the long weekend for me, and before I get into all the amazing softball action that happened over the weekend, I wanted to talk to you about another sporting event that took place. In case you missed it, this past weekend was the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500. I usually don't watch stuff like this, but I had some time to kill on Sunday while I was waiting to attend my nieces graduation, so I decided to flip it on.

I have to admit, the first half of the race was pretty exciting. You might wonder what an icy road has to do with the Indy 500, but if you watched the race, you probably already know. Before the green flag even dropped, cars were all over the place! That's right, someone spun out and had to exit the race on the pace lap!

After a pretty long weather delay, it's safe to say the conditions on the track were not the best. I watched as for the first hundred laps there was yellow flag after yellow flag. Cars were hitting the wall right and left. In fact, cars were even hitting people in the pit lanes. It was mass chaos. The majority of the drivers were blaming the accidents on "cold tires" from what I could tell. Finally, but the second 100 laps around the 2.5 mile track they were finally able to get some traction down.

On a funny note, there was a guy who pretty early in the race wrecked out his car with no hope of getting back in the race. He then jumped on a helicopter and made his way from Indianapolis down to North Carolina to race in the NASCAR race that night.

As I said, I haven't watched a race in quite some time. I used to with my dad, but I don't do that anymore now that I have moved out. By the halfway point of the race, eight or nine of the 32 entrants were completely out of the race. I have a co-worker who attends the qualifying laps and the actual race each year and it will be interesting to see what his take was from the race having been there in person.

My brother in law isn't much of a racing fan, but he got the opportunity to attend the race one time and he said it was the most amazing sporting event he has ever been to. I think that speaks volumes about how awesome it is.

I can definitely see the draw to Formula 1 racing and why it is one of the biggest sports in the world right now. It doesn't hurt that the fan base is sitting on wads of cash either...
