NCAA Football Week 1

How the heck did we get here already? As I said the other day, it feels like we were just ushering out the NCAA football season and how here we are starting back up again. It's like these past seven months were on fast forward or something like that. I'm not complaining at all, I just can't quite wrap my head around it.

Given the lack of NFL football this past weekend, the NCAA games were spread across a wide range of dates through the Labor Day weekend. The most important thing for me is the fact that my Michigan State Spartans beat The Western Michigan Broncos in their opening game of the season. It's a very new team with the Spartans, so there was a lot of question marks. I still don't feel like Chiles is the answer they need at Quarterback, but hopefully he is able to find his footing at some point.

It's been a rocky road across last season and even at the beginning of this season. I wouldn't call his performance stand out at all. In fact, if I had to put a word on it I would probably use adequate. It was just enough to get them the win, but nothing that blew my socks off. Hopefully that changes over time, but the question is, how long is enough time?

The biggest upset of the weekend was the Florida State win over (8) Alabama. I don't think anyone saw that coming and in the aftermath the Alabama coach finds himself without a job. Florida State was absolutely horrible last year, so it makes me a little happy to see them turning the corner perhaps. Even if they don't win another game all season, they at least have this Alabama win under their belt.

Yes, (3) Ohio State beat (1) Texas, but that really wasn't as big of a blowout as you might think. The big story in that game was the fact that Arch Manning had his first start on the road. It wasn't anything special. In fact, I'd argue that Chiles has a better start than Manning.

Every other game was teams doing what they do in cupcake games. A few notable exceptions would be the (10)Miami upset vs (6)Notre Dame, and the (9)LSU upset of (4)Clemson, but as my brother in law said, this is just a good example of why preseason rankings are stupid.

Next weekend is going to be a lot tougher go for Michigan State as they face a Boston College team that is quite good. I'm a bit nervous about that one. The bright spot in the Big 10 this season is Penn State and the fact that they have a large majority of their team back from last year. While they are currently only ranked number 2 in the polls, many people feel they deserve to be number 1. I really hope they see the success this season that @leonis has been hoping for a while now.
