This is the weekend when things really start to heat up in the world of college football. With the majority of the cupcake games behind us, we now start conference play. I've kind of been dreading this and eager for it both at the same time. I know this is where Michigan State is either going to rise to the challenge or fall flat on their face. I think either way, it isn't going to be pretty.
I was just talking to someone the other day who is a nasty University of Michigan fan (I forgive him), and I was telling him about how I think the defense for Michigan State is going to end up being their weak point this season. I think they have the tools on offense to put up some points if they can get on the same page, but the defense just seems all out of sorts.
I guess we will find out this weekend when they face number 25 USC in southern California. There is a good chance I won't watch the game since it doesn't start until 11:00 PM at night Eastern time...
Meanwhile, as you might imagine, there are some other games on this weekend as well. Number 17 Texas Tech is facing off against number 16 Utah in one of the many battles of undefeated teams. This is where that second number starts ticking up from zero for a lot of teams. The fact is they have had it easy up until now and this is where the rubber meets the road.
Number 6 Oregon is facing Oregon State in one of the few cupcake games that are taking place this weekend. If anything, this game is probably a hold over from when the PAC 12 still existed. It just makes sense. Michigan played Central Michigan after all and Michigan State played Western Michigan.
Tulane is undefeated coming into their game against 3-0 number 13 Ole Miss. I expect Ole Miss will take this one despite the even records.
(22) Auburn vs. (11) Oklahoma could be a good game to watch if you are looking for an afternoon game on Saturday.
Probably the game I am most excited about will be the (9) Illinois vs. (19) Indiana game. This will have big implications for the Big Ten conference and should be a pretty great game to watch. It's the late game coming on at 7:30 at night and I might have to set up the projector so I can show it on the side of the trailer or something.
Other than that, I am not seeing a lot of big top 25 match ups. Yes, we are in conference play, but you need to remember that many of the conferences have a lot of teams in them, so the spread between the two is always going to be a bit wide.
What I do know is that week 4 is when things really start heating up for college football.
