Well, it was just a matter of time, but the fair weather fans have started to come out of the woodwork. I was scrolling through my Facebook page the other day (a rare occurrence these days), and I found a really funny article about the recent series between the Detroit Tigers and the Chicago Cubs. I have to believe the article was being a bit tongue in cheek, but then again, I am not so sure. Detroit fans are pretty loyal and they are also pretty opinionated.
Basically, the article was lamenting the fact that so many new Tigers fans have jumped on the band wagon now that the Tigers are doing well. I'm guessing Mets fans are experiencing something similar now that they are sitting right at the top of the national league with a very similar record to the Tigers in the american league.
Right now the Tigers are sitting at 44 and 25 on the season and I think the record for the Mets is something like 44 and 24. Just one loss separates the teams as of this morning. Meanwhile, the Yankees are hot on the Tigers trail with a record of 41 and 24. The national league is a little tighter with both the Cubs and the Dodgers sitting at 41 and 27, 41 and 28 respectively. You can understand why these cross league matchups are so important. With things being so tight in the NL, it's going to take a special team to face them in the World Series.
Will it be the Tigers? Newfound fans seem to think so.
As I said, the article is a bit of satire talking about how the Tigers aren't used to having so many fans (Magnum PI aside). I think my favorite quote from the article was this:
Concession stands were unprepared for the influx, with one vendor reporting he ran out of nacho cheese and patience by the second inning. “Some guy asked if we had avocado toast,” he said. “I told him this was Detroit, not Coachella.”
As for long time Tigers fans like myself, I haven't been to a game in a while, but excitement like this has been a long time coming. Even in the glory days when we had Miggy, JV, and Scherzer on our roster, I don't know if we saw as much hype as this. I think it all boils down to just how well the players are playing like a team.
It's one thing to have one or two players doing well, but when the whole team is working together to bring in the wins, it's a magical thing. I just hope they can keep it up!
For the photo!
That's my oldest niece. She is a momma now and hopefully one day I will be taking cute selfies with her daughter!
Smashing picture of you both. Look forward to the next generation, too!
