I have had similar battles. I to am hounded by gmail about storage space, though specially email space cause my account goes back just as far and has thousands of emails. ><

It has certainly gotten a little better since I figured out how to turn Google Photos off, which steals my Gmail space.
I also went through the tedious process of locating every email I've sent that had a large attachment and getting rid of the large attachment.
