Four Frogs, One Name: A Plain-English Guide to Every "Pepe" Token (and the PEPE ETF News)

![A field full of frogs — but which one is yours?]

If you've spent five minutes in crypto you've seen the frog. But here's the part almost nobody says out loud: "Pepe" is not one token. It's at least four completely different things, built by different people, on different blockchains, with different rules. Mixing them up is how people get burned.

So let's slow down and sort the pond. No price predictions, no hype — just what each frog actually is, and one honest piece of news.

🐸 1. $PEPE — the Ethereum memecoin

This is the famous one. An ERC-20 token on Ethereum, launched in 2023, now one of the largest meme tokens by market cap (sitting around $1.8B in early October 2026, behind DOGE and SHIB).

One genuinely nice fact you can verify yourself: its circulating supply already equals its maximum supply (420.69 trillion tokens). That means no new PEPE will ever be minted — there's no hidden inflation faucet. That's a real, checkable property, not a marketing line.

The honest flip side: ownership is very concentrated. On-chain data has shown a small number of wallets holding the large majority of supply. That's not a conspiracy, it's just how a lot of these tokens look. But it means price can move hard and fast in both directions. A platform that respects you tells you that part too.

🐸 2. Pepecoin / PEP — the proof-of-work frog

Totally different animal. Pepecoin (PEP) is its own Layer-1 blockchain, launched January 2024 by one of the original 2013 Dogecoin "shibes." It uses Scrypt proof-of-work, one-minute blocks, and a reward that halves every 100,000 blocks — and it's merge-mined alongside Litecoin and Dogecoin, so Scrypt miners can earn it as a bonus without extra electricity.

It even got a public nod from Litecoin as a "brother in Scrypt mining" after a major exchange listing. This frog is a miner's coin, not an Ethereum token. Same name, entirely different machine.

🐸 3. Hive-Engine PEPE our home-pond frog

Right here on Hive, there's a PEPE token on Hive-Engine, created by @pepetoken. You can trade it at hive-engine.com/trade/PEPE. It is not the Ethereum PEPE, it's a Hive-native community token with its own vibe: power-up days, regular token burns, and fun with froggie frens.

If you're a Hive person, this is the frog you'll actually bump into day to day. Follow @pepetoken and come play.

🐸 4. RPEPE — the original Rare Pepe

Before memecoins, there were Rare Pepes: hand-made trading cards issued on Counterparty (a protocol built on Bitcoin) between 2016 and 2018. The official directory holds roughly 1,774 cards across 36 series, each approved by volunteer "Rare Pepe scientists."

RPEPE is a specific card — Series 34, Card 37, with 2,000 copies ever issued and none burned. These are genuine digital collectibles with provable, locked supply on the Bitcoin blockchain, and many are now viewable as Emblem Vaults. This is the artful, historical corner of Pepe-land, and the one closest to our heart.

The one piece of news: the PEPE ETF filing

You may have seen headlines that a PEPE ETF is coming. Here's the careful version.

On October 2, 2026, Canary Capital filed an amended S-1 registration with the U.S. SEC for a proposed spot PEPE ETF (it would track the Ethereum PEPE, custodied by BitGo, aiming to list on Cboe BZX). You can read the actual filing on the SEC's EDGAR system it's public.

But please read this next part slowly, because the headlines usually skip it:

An amended filing is a regulatory step. It is not an approval, and it is not a launch. No shares can be sold until the registration becomes effective, and the SEC has not approved anything. There are no investor inflows yet.

Tellingly, on the day of the filing, the price actually drifted down. A filing is paperwork, not a price engine. Anyone telling you "ETF = number go up" is selling you a feeling, not a fact.

Why we bother writing this

Because the frog deserves better than confusion. Four tokens, four different trust models — and knowing which is which is the whole game. Our little corner of the pond runs on one rule: evidence over hype. We'll show you the verifiable stuff (fixed supply, on-chain card counts, public filings), we'll flag the risky stuff (concentration, "it's just paperwork"), and we will never promise you a price.

Know your frog. Then have fun with it. 🐸

Educational content only, nothing here is financial advice. Always verify token contracts and filings yourself before acting. Pepe the Frog was created by artist Matt Furie; we use the character respectfully and stand against its use as a hate symbol.
