Hello dear friends of nature,
The snow has melted and the sun has come out, so of course I had to go out into the garden right away. It fills me with joy to make the first preparations and see what needs to be done—just to see what needs to be done. So I started with the first important steps.
First, I sowed wild garlic in this corner, as I still had two bags left. What better location than a damp and shady spot? Wild garlic loves these conditions, allowing it to grow vigorously and emerge from under the leaves. So I took my wild garlic seeds, which I had already stored in the refrigerator for several weeks to accelerate germination—because wild garlic is a cold germinator—and spread them generously over the entire area. Then I scattered the leaves back over the soil so that it would have a better start after the warm phase. Let's see if it decides to grow this year.
Then I checked on the hardy carrots I sowed last year. They definitely need a little more time, but they have already formed impressively long roots. I'll leave them to rest a little longer and think I'll be able to harvest the first batch of carrots at the end of March.
After that, I took care of the tomato greenhouse for this year. There were large patches of turf lying there to rot, but with this amount, it didn't work out completely last year – which isn't a bad thing, because now they can serve another purpose. This greenhouse is going into its first round with me this year. So, I first removed the grass clippings, improved the soil, and worked in some slow-release fertilizer. Then I put some of the turf back on top so that there would be the right amount when the plants moved in and to protect the soil in case any weeds tried to grow through. The whole tomato greenhouse actually needs a complete overhaul, but there are so many other things to do this year. If it serves us well this year, I'll be happy.
Finally, I started to clear the wildest and previously untouched raised bed of nettle roots—a really exhausting procedure. The roots can become very thick and run criss-cross for up to five meters. I love nettles, but not so much in the raised bed where vegetables are supposed to grow. I used my small axe to help me and lifted the severed roots out of the ground piece by piece. You can see what I've managed to do – I'll do the rest when the weather is nice again. It's still winter, so I'm taking it slowly.
It was a great day. You immediately feel different and more balanced when you see what you have achieved. And so I am looking forward to the coming gardening year, full of enthusiasm to take the garden oasis one step further.

Hallo ihr lieben Freunde der Natur,

Es erfüllt mich mit Freude, die ersten Vorbereitungen zu treffen und nach dem Rechten zu sehen – einfach zu schauen, was alles getan werden muss. Also begann ich mit den ersten wichtigen Schritten.
Als Erstes habe ich diese Ecke hier mit Bärlauch eingesät, die beiden Tüten hatte ich noch. Welcher Standort eignet sich besser als ein feuchter und schattiger Platz? Genau solche Bedingungen liebt Bärlauch, um kräftig zu wachsen und unter dem Laub hervorzutreten. Ich nahm also meine Bärlauchsamen, die ich bereits mehrere Wochen im Kühlschrank gelagert hatte, um die Keimung zu beschleunigen – denn Bärlauch ist ein Kaltkeimer – und verteilte sie großzügig über die gesamte Fläche. Danach habe ich das Laub wieder über den Boden gestreut, damit er nach der Wärmephase eine bessere Starthilfe hat. Mal sehen, ob er sich dieses Jahr schon entscheidet zu wachsen.
Dann schaute ich nach den winterharten Möhren, die ich im letzten Jahr gesät habe. Sie brauchen definitiv noch eine Weile, aber sie haben bereits eine beeindruckend lange Wurzel gebildet. Ich lasse sie noch etwas ruhen und denke, dass ich den ersten Schwung Möhren Ende März ernten kann.
Danach habe ich mich um das Tomatenhaus für dieses Jahr gekümmert. Dort lagen große Grasnarben zum Verrotten, aber bei dieser Menge hat es im letzten Jahr nicht vollständig geklappt – was gar nicht schlimm ist, denn so können sie eine weitere Funktion erfüllen. Also habe ich die Grasnarben erst einmal entfernt, die Erde aufgebessert und Langzeitdünger eingearbeitet. Anschließend habe ich wieder einen Teil der Grasnarben oben aufgelegt, damit die richtige Menge vorhanden ist, wenn die Pflanzen einziehen, und um den Boden zu schützen, falls Wildwuchs durchkommen möchte. Das ganze Tomatenhaus müsste eigentlich mal generalüberholt werden, aber dieses Jahr steht so viel anderes an. Wenn es dieses Jahr gute Dienste leistet, bin ich schon zufrieden.
Zum Schluss habe ich begonnen, das wildeste und bisher unangetastete Hochbeet von Brennnesselwurzeln zu befreien – eine wirklich anstrengende Prozedur. Die Wurzeln können sehr dick werden und bis zu fünf Meter lang kreuz und quer verlaufen. Ich liebe Brennnesseln, aber im Hochbeet, wo Gemüse wachsen soll, eher weniger. Ich nahm meine kleine Axt zur Hilfe und hob die abgetrennten Wurzeln Stück für Stück aus der Erde. Ihr seht ja, was ich geschafft habe – den Rest mache ich, wenn das Wetter wieder so einen schönen Tag beschert. Es ist ja immer noch Winter, also immer schön langsam.
Es war ein toller Tag. Man fühlt sich sofort anders und ausgeglichener, wenn man sieht, was man erreicht hat. Und so freue ich mich auf das kommende Gartenjahr, voller Enthusiasmus, die Gartenoase einen weiteren Schritt voranzubringen.
