Back to the Green: My first plant update in a long time

(edited)

HiveGarden Update

It's been a long time since I gave an update on my plants. The garden always looks a bit bleak in winter anyway. I do have some evergreen shrubs, but other than that, it's mostly just soil you see.
My mint (regular, chocolate and Maroccan) and lemon balm don't look good, but I'm certain that they are healthy below the ground. The temperatures haven't been that far below zero, so I don't think the roots have been frozen.

I have also completely cut down my raspberry bush, giving it space to grow new stems in spring. This bush is guaranteed for loads for raspberries every year. I'm sure it will again this year.

My greenhouse and cuttings

Just like my backyard, my houseplants also went into a kind of dormant or slower growth phase during the winter months. The shorter days and less sunlight makes them, with a few exceptions, grow a lot slower than in spring and summer.

As I had been multiplying plant by division, cuttling or taking offsets the number of plants had been growing over the past year. Since not all plants like to be in the windowsil, I mounted a book shelf to the wall in my office where I stalled the 'little ones'.

Alocasia Bambino Pink Variegata

In my greenhouse I have my Alocasia Bambino Pink Variegata that I bought as a tiny plant last year in May. It really had to suffer from low light conditions I think. It lost two of its four leaves.
I keep it in the greenhouse and keep the moss moist since it likes a high humidity.
I do think I need to buy a grow light and maybe a humidifier.
Despite it losing two of its leaves it does look healthy to me.

Scindapsus Epipremnum pinnatum 'N'Joy'

This cuttling is on water for quite some time now. The roots are quite long already, but I don't see secondary roots yet. I've read that you'd better wait for secondary roots to grow before planting it in soil. I'll just have to wait some more.
One of the cuttlings has some brown spots, but the others look very strong and healthy.

Dieffenbachia Seguine

This is a plant I bought for my daughter. She forgot to water it for a ling time which caused a lot of leaves to die off. I've been looking after this plant since then and will try to make it a healthy one again. Another lesson to not let your teenage daughter take full care of houseplants 😂

I gave this plant as a present for my daughter a couple of months ago.

Syngonium Albo variegata

Another not so succesful plant is my Syngonium Albo variegata. It had created four leaves in the past year, but all have tuerned brown. It seems to be quite a difficult plant.
The white spotted leaves are beautiful, but the plant needs the green in its leaves to produce energy. One by one the leaves dried out. It could also have to do with the low light conditions. Also for this plant I need a grow light I think.
I hope the roots are still fine and the plant will start to produce some new leaves this year.

Ficus Cyathistipula

I've planted the cuttling from my Ficus in soil a few months ago and it's really doing well. It keeps growing fresh new leaves. I've been cutting off the bottom leaves which grow very big for such a small plant, so the plant can invest a bit more in its tiny stem. I'm hoping to grow it more into a small tree with a bigger stem. It's a nice experiment because I actually don't know if that will work this way.

Nephentes (Monkey Jars)

This is one of my favorite plants. The jars with which the plant catches insects have dried out last fall, which is usual after a season I read. This plant was also moved to another spot in my house. I read that this plant needs direct sunlight and a high humidity, so I hung it in the south facing window in my home office and try to spray it every couple of days.
It seems to be doing really fine. I did remove some of the leaves at the bottom that have turned yellow, but it also grows new leaves. And....

... the plant created a new offshoot! Next to the two stems a tiny Monkey Jar appeared from the soil. I didn't know Monkey Jars multiplied themselves like this. I have to see if I keep it in this pot with the other two. I think it may be better to seperate them when it grows bigger.

And for the pitchers... there are quite a few leaves that have starting pitchers on them. They look dried out, but I've read that this is normal and that these can still grow out to become large pitchers. I'm really curious if this will happen and how many it will produce. Time will tell!

Philodendron Imperial Green

The plant that really didn't care about the winter and the lack of sunlight is my Philodendron Imperial Green. I had quite a large one which I had cut off one part to multiply it and seperated rest into two plants. The largest of the three (picture below) has constantly been growing new leaves during the fall and winter. You see it is starting to roll out another leave in the middle. The leaves are so nicely dark green. I did notice some yellow spots on some of them recently. I don't know the reason for that.
This one is growing so big that I need to think what I'll do with it. I might move it into a pot with a moss pole so it can grow alongside that pole.

Here is the other 'Philo' in our living room. It's a bit smaller, but also growing strong!

Thank you!

So this was the update of my gardenjournal. Thanks for reading my blog!
If you have any advise for me after reading this blog, please share it with me because I've just started propagating plants this year so I'm just an amateur.
And if you have experience in plant propagation, please share it too!

Bleak is a good word for this time of year, love the way you have used such a small space for your raspberry plants, that has given me some ideas!

If I give them more space, they will take it. I don't want it to grow too massive!
When they grow bigger I tie them to the fence. It can be a bit hard to pick the raspberries that are in the middle of the bush, but I do get loads from the bush, so I it's ok to miss a few.
