Cassava Farming: A Low-Cost Crop That Keeps Growing With Very Little Care

Today, I decided to visit my father’s farm because it had been a while since I last went there. We have been very busy lately, especially because of an unexpected family situation and having a patient to take care of. Because of this, the farm was not visited as often as before.

I went there with some of my friends who wanted to harvest cassava. We picked some of the cassava roots to bring home. We planned to boil them and enjoy them as a simple snack. For me, it was a simple activity, but it felt special because I was harvesting something that my father planted. Fresh from the farm.

My father planted these cassava plants last April 2026. His plan was to harvest them around All Saints’ Day in November. Cassava is usually more sellable during November because many families prepare food for gatherings and visitors. It can be used to make different Filipino delicacies and dishes like alupi, binignit, and aripahol. My ultimate favorite.

What I like about cassava is that it is not a very demanding plant. Even though we were not able to visit the farm regularly, the cassava continued to grow. It can survive with less attention, which makes it a good crop for us farmers who sometimes become busy with other responsibilities.

While walking around my father’s farm, I also started thinking about my own plans. Recently, I have been thinking of staying here in the mountain for good. I am slowly appreciating this kind of simple life. It is peaceful here, surrounded by plants, banana, fresh air, and quiet mornings.

I realized that I don't really need many things. For me, having a peaceful place to live, plus a good signal and internet connection, is already enough. I can still work online while enjoying the simple life in the mountains.

I also want to plant cassava here because it is not expensive to grow and does not need too much care. It is one of those plants that can simply grow and give something back to us when harvest time comes.

This visit reminded me again why I love gardening and farming. It does not have to be complicated. Sometimes, a few cassava plants growing quietly in the soil can already give food, income, and even a reason to slow down and appreciate life.
