Some projects start with an idea that just won’t go away. For me, it was the idea that I’d long wanted to create my own tactical board-game-style video game. Along with that, a management platform that lets you develop your team and its environment from game to game.
For the past two weeks, with the help of Claude Code, I’ve been working on it every evening, and it has now turned into something I’d like to show you: Hiveball.
Hiveball is a turn-based, 5-on-5 football game played in a browser. Two teams face off on a field; each team has an end zone, and whoever carries the ball into it scores a touchdown. Blocking, tackling, and passing are all determined by rolling a ten-sided die (D10)—whoever has the better attributes has a better chance, but luck always plays a role.
There is a certain similarity to games like Bloodbowl by Games Workshop.
However, for copyright reasons, I made a conscious effort to design both the attributes and the game system differently. Nearly all game mechanics work completely differently, and -at least for me— this makes the game feel much smoother as a result.
The biggest difference is likely the complexity and the game duration. While a game of Bloodbowl can easily last 1–3 hours, a game of Hiveball against the AI is over in 5–10 minutes at the latest. At least at the current stage of development.

The actual match is only half the battle. On top of that, there’s a full-fledged management component: building your roster, buying players, training them, managing their aging, expanding seven different club facilities (training center, academy, medical department, stadium, fan shop, catering, public relations), and keeping track of the club’s entire finances, including salaries, ticket revenue, and sponsors.
And since a club needs an opponent: To get you started, there’s a small single-player league with five AI opponents, all of whom (are supposed to) have their own playing styles—some play aggressively and crowd around the ball, while others rely on precise passing or tight defense. I fine-tuned the AI personalities by having them play against each other in offline matches.
I’m aware that the AI isn’t very strong yet, and the different playing styles are only visible in certain situations. This is one of the areas I’d like to work on with your help.

Hiveball runs entirely in your browser—no server, no account, no cloud—and your game scores are stored only locally on your device (localStorage). Nothing leaves your computer.
You can find the code and all the instructions on GitHub:

Starts Hiveball as a single-player game with a default team that competes against a default AI team. There is no team development beyond this game.
Opens the Manager. Here, you must first create a team, and then you can always start the next game from the Manager. After the game, the result is saved locally in your browser cache, and you’ll be redirected back to the Manager.
In addition, there’s a quick start guide and detailed game instructions available in German and English.
A quick note to start with: This is a hobby prototype, not a finished product. I’d love for you to try it out and provide feedback, but for now, the code itself remains my own project—I retain all rights to it.
Es geht also weiter.
Euer Kheldar1982
Currently, it’s purely a local single-player experience against AI opponents. A real league with multiple human players is planned as the next major step, along with a few areas still under development regarding market value formulas and balancing. So, the project is moving forward.
So far, Hiveball isn’t connected to the Hive blockchain yet. I’m considering doing this, but I’m still weighing the pros and cons and figuring out which assets—such as players—could become their own NFTs.
The simplest approach would be to just store the entire club persistently on the blockchain. However, the players in particular are ideal candidates to become their own NFTs and then be tradable on a player market.
If you’re in the mood for a bit of a tactical football board game experience, feel free to check it out and let me know what you think and how I can further improve the game from your perspective. I’d also love to hear your feedback on a potential Hive integration.
Until then, have fun with Hiveball.
Best regards,
Kheldar1982
