One of the most popular thrilling novels in Bengali literature is Bibhutibhushan Banerjee's Chander Pahar. First published in 1937, this book is still equally popular with readers. Many of us spent our childhood finding thrills in the pages of books. Sometimes we chased after ghosts with Tenida, sometimes we unraveled mysteries with Feluda. But if the question is asked, which book has taken our minds on an adventurous journey? Most of the answer will be 'Chander Pahar' written by Bibhutibhushan Banerjee. This is not just a book, it is the name of a dream, the name of courage, and the name of a strong desire to know the unknown.
The main character of the novel is Shankar, an ordinary rural youth. Since childhood, he has had a strong interest in traveling and adventure. By the pull of fate, he goes to work in Africa and that is where his thrilling journey begins. Shankar faces the fearsome beasts of the jungle, poisonous snakes, volcanic eruptions, and raging rivers. On this journey, he is accompanied by the Portuguese explorer Diego Alvarez. Together, they set out to find a mysterious mountain called "Mountain of the Moon" and the hidden diamond mine inside it.
Shankar is an ordinary Bengali young man like us. But he had infinite dreams in his eyes. He did not want a comfortable job, he wanted to discover something new by risking his life. This character of Shankar sows the seeds of dreams in our minds. The character of Shankar's friend Alvarez is quite important in the story. Their friendship, their adventure together, and finally Alvarez's fate give more depth to the story.
This book teaches us that dreaming is not enough, but courage and hard work are also needed to make that dream a reality. Shankar has faced dangers step by step. Starting from adverse weather conditions to attacks by wild animals - he has faced everything with courage. The book teaches us that the real thrill of life can be enjoyed only by conquering fear. The deep love that Bibhutibhushan has shown for nature in his writing fascinates the reader. While reading the book, it feels as if nature is not just a backdrop, but a living character in the story.
