The Engagement Barometer comes to Hive through the HivePulse.app

While it was something in the making for quite a bit, I am now announcing the successful launch of a new feature implementation on the HivePulse app in the form of engagement on the Hive blockchain. I wonder what that can translate into in this ecosystem. And the idea and scope of it was to answer a core question: "Am I contributing more to discussions than I'm receiving or is it the other way around?" This gives users a clear, quantifiable view of their role in the ecosystem — whether they're actively engaging others' content or primarily receive the community attention. And from here the idea of an "Engagement Barometer" came to mind. It's scope intends to cover all comment-based interactions: comments posted on others content, replies to discussions and incoming comments/replies received on the user's own posts.

Implementation

When it comes to implementation, what I like about it is that as I put in place a good framework now I can extend it once new ideas with utility come up. We already have daily stats which are later on aggregated by others units of measure: weeks, months, years, all time and from here it was just a matter to aggregate additional metrics and store them accordingly for fast processing. While that technically was sorted out, it remained the form of expression and here is where for the UI I have chose a barometer that can reflect the level of engagement. I could also detail here what those levels translate into, but I will let you discover what kind of engager each of you are based on your activity.

Engagement Barometer

The Engagement Barometer is the hero section at the top of the page. It provides an overview of the user's engagement balance for a selected timeframe (Day, Week, Month, or Year). Its balance is easy calculated as the difference between Comments/Replies that the user posted against the Comment/Replies the user received to its content. From there a magic formula will tell each of us what type of interactor we are and a small explanation for it.

Engagement History

The Engagement History section provides a detailed breakdown of the user's engagement by time period, presented as a historical table with current and future periods based on selection. I wanted to capture things like "this week" or "this month" and not just a glimpse of the past, but also of the future. This way I believe it becomes more active and maybe a little bit more motivational compared to past periods.

This is the incipient implementation of the vision for the Engagement page for users interacting within the Hive blockchain. I have more ideas to add to it - some of them coming even as I am writing this article, but I want to take my time to make sure they bring any stats value to the app. The idea of showing a feedback loop: users who see their low Engagement Barometer may be motivated to comment more, while those at the high of it should have more reasons for pride and fulfillment.
