The Mysterious Call

You don't know me, but I know you," the voice said before the call cut out.

I felt a shiver run down my spine, staring at my phone as I wondered who could be behind this call. This is the second time I am receiving this kind of call. The first time I received it, I brushed it off as I thought maybe it was an erroneous call; maybe the person mistook my number for someone else's phone number. But now I wasn't so sure.

The voices sounded so familiar, yet I couldn't place it. I racked my brain, trying to recall every conversation I have had with friends, family, and clients, wondering if there was something that i could have said that triggered this call. But nothing came to mind.

I was so scared to the extent that the thought of this mysterious call disrupted my work the whole of that day. The uncertainty was unsettling, making me question my own sanity.

As I was about to leave for work, I overheard my colleagues laughing in the kitchenette, wondering what was so amusing to them, while my day had been disrupted by a useless call. Curiously, I moved close to the kitchenette door when I overheard Chinedu telling Martin about the prank calls he made on me.

Hearing this, I pushed open the kitchenette door, and my colleagues turned to face me. Chinedu's grin faltered as he caught my eye, and Martin looked away, trying to stop himself from laughing.

"Chinedu, is this your idea of a joke?" I asked, trying to sound calm.

Chinedu smirks, still grinning. "Hey, I just wanted to have a little fun. I didn't mean to freak you out.

"Are you serious? Is this funny to you? I replied. As I turned to leave angrily, Martin called out, "Hey, we are really sorry about that. We promise to make it up to you."

I slammed the door in their face and smiled, feeling a sense of relief washed over me. It was just a prank, after all. But I couldn't help but wonder—what if it wasn't just a prank?
