Splinterlands lore: The catastrophe called Usut
There are many calamities that have befallen the Splinterlands, but one resonates through time. If only the Lord Darkness himself, Lagfael, knew what chaos lay ahead, he would never have brought the red dragon, Usut to life. It was a mistake that resulted in carnage far beyond the imagination of any being.
Let's go on a journey of how Usut came to be
After being dead for 300 years, Lagfael found Usut's corpse on a pile of bones and treasure in his lair inside the black Glacier of mortis. Usut's body had been preserved in a tomb of ice. Somehow, Lagfael was drawn to this vile dragon, and so, with an ancient spell, he brought Usut back to life.
Usut has been called many things by different people. Eater of death, the pestilent, lord of ruin are all names that reflect his reputation, but one stands out the most, the undying. Usut revels in the joy of haunting the living. He has dined with death and has seen it all. Usut is Lagfael's personal reaper. He sends Usut to take out his enemies without mercy.
This dragon roams the skies of the Splinterlands with a characteristic cry that strikes untold fear to everyone who hears it. The cry is like a signal to everyone that death is near. Destruction always accompanies Usut wherever it goes.
While that is most of the story, the events that happen next are worth telling
It is said that Usut fears nothing and only obeys the command of Lagfael. However, many in the Splinterlands feared the day such a destructive creature would no longer be bound to the command of Lagfael. He would commit more atrocities than he already had. Unfortunately, that dreaded day came.
One fateful day, Usut stopped paying heed to Lagfael's command. It became wild and rebellious. He had developed a mind and will of his own. Usut embarked on a journey of utter destruction, starting with Lagfael. News had spread of Usut eliminating the lord of darkness, Lagfael and it sent shivers down the spines of everyone who heard it.
Usut destroyed everything and everyone in its path. It had the insatiable desire to kill. On one occasion, Usut got confronted by a group of Knights. Their swords engulfed in holy flames.
"You think those swords scare me?" Usut said as his voice caused shockwaves.
"We will kill you, and send you to the cursed tomb from which you came from" the soldiers said with the last bit of courage they could muster.
"I am Usut, the Undying. I cannot be killed" Usut said as he laughed, causing the ground to shake.
Before the Knights could launch an attack with their swords, Usut breathed dark flames from his mouth, melting every Knight in the process. Flesh and bone could barely be separated from molten metal.
Usut let out a loud cry, informing the Splinterlands of more mayhem he is about to unleash. Every part of the Splinterlands witnessed the gravity of Usut's pure lust for blood and destruction. There was unimaginable chaos.
Suddenly, Usut vanished, no one heard his wails anymore. It was as if he had completely disappeared from existence. However, everyone lived in perpetual fear of the day the Undying would make a return. Usut was gone, but he still gave the creatures of the Splinterlands nightmares.
