Battle Mage Secrets - We Learn From Our Losses And Improve!

image.png

The theme for the current "Battle Mage Secret" challenge is Super Sneak this time! This means all melee units gain the Sneak ability.

It's not always easy to get the specific ruleset, but if you play hard enough, you definitely can find one! This time I was lucky enough to have one - woohoo!

So here's the interesting battle that I encountered.

Anyway, I thought it would be still be interesting to introduce some useful cards and show how their strengths can be maximised especially with a particular ruleset. In this post, the featured card is a Epic Fire card, Forgotten One!

Forgotten One was always known to me as a card to be used for Poison battles because it has Immunity. As I play with a Bronze deck, I never saw what other abilities that cards have in the later levels, but today I was given an eye-opener by my opponent. My opponent used a Level 3 Forgotten One, and it had an additional ability Retaliate which terrorised my team so badly because it was a Super Sneak plus Blast battle. Just with Retaliate alone, my entire team was just wiped out by just this card. And with that, I learnt something new about Forgotten One today.

As usual, here's the lore for Forgotten One for your reading interest:

For an age the towering beast had slumbered in the bowels of the deepest caverns of fire, a weapon forged for a war lost to memory or myth.

Into an invocation drawn from a rotting manuscript the High Magus of the Crypteia poured all his malice and hate. Drawing the razored flint across his palm he sealed the pact, completing the summoning, calling forth the great flaming homunculus, the Forgotten One.

As the great beast crawled from the burning pit, the Magus bade it roam free and armed it with a broad blade twice as tall as any man. It dwells there now, birthing others of its kind and passing on the knowledge of their making, and serves at the pleasure of the Magus as a hand of Chaos.

Battle Type & Team Lineup

PositionCard/LevelMana
SummonerKelya Frendul4

Instinctively I went for Kelya Frendul because the Speed boost and extra Armor is definitely very useful for this Super Sneak and Blast battle, because the key is to hit first, if not early.

PositionCard/LevelMana
1Torrent Fiend0

Because of what I planned to do, Torrent Fiend would be my tank as the mana quota was pretty tight and I have some interesting cards in the backline.

PositionCard/LevelMana
2Drybone Raider12

For a 18 mana battle, I was adamant that I should spend 12 mana to field Drybone Raider because he would have 4 attacks and that means 4 extra Blast attacks. For a low mana battle, that would be enough to take out quite a number of cards.

PositionCard/LevelMana
3Venator Kinjo2

Venator Kinjo is also a great card to play when there is Blast because of its Reflection Shield ability. Moreover, there is Super Sneak ruleset so it gets to attack from his Camouflage too.

  • Pre Battle: These days, I am more or less used to these lopsided matches. A Level 2 summoner fighting against a Level 5 summoner? All eyes will be on my Drybone Raider to see the amount of damage he can deal.
    image.png
  • Round 1: Drybone Raider as expected dished out 4 hits + 4 Blast hits and cleared my opponent's backline. I was optimistic about my chances and then something caught my eye! My opponent's Forgotten One has Retaliate!? What on earth was that. And the Retaliate was accompanied with Blast, that's a big damage and my Torrent Fiend went down, and my Drybone Raider took a significant dent too.

  • Round 2: Ouch! There was no way out for this. Every hit from my card was accompanied with a Retaliate and the accompanying hit. With a 5+3 damage output from just one card, I didn't had any answer.
    image.png
  • Round 3: As though it wasn't insulting enough, Venator Kinjo caused his own death by hitting and taking the Retaliate hit. Oh well.

Post Battle

Did my strategy work? To be honest, for a Bronze deck, I thought it was a decent lineup. But at where I am currently battling (Gold League), it's kinda lacking. With interesting cards like Forgotten One with second abilities that could be gamechanger, I needed to be more careful and bring myself up to speed on how to counter such cards.

What's the Battle Mage Secret? Even though I didn't win, I learnt something new this round that Forgotten One has Retaliate at Level 3! Sometimes it's the losses that teach us more than the wins!

With that, I end this Season in Wild with a 50% win rate! With my current card collection, I definitely am very satisfied. (Yes, I bought the Wild Season Pass for this!)

So that's all I have! What are your takeaways from this battle? Feel free to comment below, as I am always keen to learn and improve!

As always, thanks for reading and have a pleasant day ahead!
