Hello Splinterlands Summoners! In today's edition of Social Media Challenge, let's check out the new card, Kelan Gaines. He is the last Rebellion card to be offered in the Voucher Shop and will be available on March 18.
Kelan Gaines is a rare, eight mana dual splinter card: Death and Dragon. At level one, he can deal two magic damage, is very fast with five speed and has six health. He also has the Snipe ability. He can be acquired from the Voucher Shop at 100 Vouchers per BCX or $2.1 per BCX at the time of this writing. For myself, I would like him at level four. At this level he gains one more health and two abilities: Phase and Backfire. These abilities take advantage of his tremendous speed. Phase will allow him to dodge magic attacks while Backfire will deal 2 physical damage to an enemy whenever he successfully dodges an attack. Of course at max level is where he truly shines when he can deal three magic damage, has six speed and nine health. What makes him powerful at max level is he gains the Double Strike ability doubling his damage potential.
The Astral Entity is a Death Summoner who grant units a 25% chance to Dodge the enemy physical attacks. This buff will complement Kelan's Backfire ability.
Quix the Devious decreases the enemy units speed. This will indirectly buff Kelan and aid him in dodging the enemy attacks. This will also help trigger Kelan's Backfire ability.
Nidhoggr is, in my opinion, the best summoner for Kelan. The reason is the Blast ability that Kelan can get from Nidhoggr. With Kelan gaining the Blast ability and having the Snipe and Double Strike abilities together with his three magic damage and insane speed, he can decimate the enemy team before they can even strike back. On the other hand, this pairing will work best in high mana battles.
There are a lot of units that can help Kelan even be more effective in battle. Those that will provide him with armor, increase his abilities with Martyr, or increase his speed will be great units to use with him.
Runeseer Sevaya has Protect ability which gives +2 armor to all allied units. This will increase Kelan's defense and sustain him in battle longer. Sevaya also has the Blind ability, increasing the chance for opponents to miss and therefore triggering Kelan's Backfire ability.
A lot of players probably have this card. It's one of the cards I often use in my Death team since it provides armor to the team. Similar to Runeseer Sevaya, this card will increase Kelan's defense by providing him with two armor stat.
Any card with the Swiftness ability like the Ujurak Elder, Clockwork Aide or Supply Runner that can boost Kelan's speed further and help him dodge attacks. Remember that with Kelan's tremendous damage potential, making him attack first before the enemy can may decide the battle even before the enemy's turn starts.
Of course, no card is perfect. This is what makes Splinterlands a fun game to play. Players like us need to devise strategies and counters to each team and powerful cards. For Kelan who rely on his speed and dodge as well as his magic damage, players will need to decrease his damage potential as well as ensure to hit him. These are abilities that can help eliminate him and/or decrease his stats.
Void decreases magic damage by one. This will help lessen Kelan's damage potential and may help the team stay longer in battle and eliminate Kelan's team before they do. Void armor shields against damage the way regular armors do against melee and ranged damage.
Silence reduces the magic attack of all enemy monsters. Similar to Void but this is stronger since this will reduce Kelan's attack to all enemy units.
Units with Phase like Djinn Oshannus can dodge against magic attacks. On the other hand, they have to be faster than Kelan to be able to do so.
Units with Slow can decrease Kelan's insane speed and thus prevent him from dodging. It will also even the odds in speed if the team has speedy units that can match Kelan.
Units with True Strike ability cannot miss. This ability is a great counter to Kelan's speed and dodging potential. Units with high damage like the Swell Spore Beast which deals a lot of damage and has True Strike will be a great counter to Kelan.
Units with the Magic Reflect ability will be the best counter against Kelan. These units will return Kelan's magic attack. Barashkukor is a one of these units. Not only does he has the Magic Reflect ability, he can also deal five magic damage of his own.
Assuming a cost of $2.1 per BCX, a level four Kelan Gaines will cost $52.5 while a max copy will cost $241.5. For comparison, below are max copies of legendary Rebellion cards in the market so it's your decision if you want to buy a max copy of Kelan Gaines.

Yeah, this card is going to be a beast to deal with. By the way, your math is wrong above. A max card will not cost $2400, rather $240. You added an extra 0. 🙃
