Look What Splinterlands Has Done To Me...

slp.png

I've always maintained that I finally 'got' #Splinterlands when I understood the collectibility of the cards in the game.

Up until then, I had never played a card game in my life. The concept of 'playing a card' and building ones deck was foreign to me. Let's just say, Magic The Gathering was so off my radar it wasn't funny...

However, I did understand these key aspects to the game and eco-system:

  1. There are only a limited amount of each card!

  2. Opening packs is addictive!

With those bits of information firmly planted into my mind, I started buying Untamed packs on the market around this time last year. The thrill of opening a pack and revealing a 'legendary card' was something I quickly became hooked on...But remember, I still had no idea what a legendary card even meant...I just knew they were super rare and in limited quantities.

It tapped into my childhood and the thrill of collecting basketball, hockey and baseball cards. Searching for that elusive card that would complete my deck. And when times got tough and I couldn't find the card, I would jump on my bike and head down to the local collectibles store to barter with the shop owner to finally get it into my possession...

It's why I'm so excited about Chaos Legion!

I know a lot of people look at it as an investment, buying the packs and holding onto them for when the market dries up. And I might do a bit of that, but for me...It's the thrill of the chase!

In the packs I buy...Will I reveal a gold foil legendary or two?

My wife just rolls her eyes at me when I'm soaking up as much @splinterlands content as possible.

I'm always watching for new content by @bulldog1205 and @infidel1258 , poking around Splintertalk for the latest 'investment strategy' posts and all in all, having a blast in the process.

But it's also trickled down into other aspects of my life, and I think you might get a kick out of what I'm about to share...

IMG_3657.jpeg

I'm back to buying and collecting sports cards now too LOL

Living in Canada, we're used to the 'hockey season' in the Great White North. And with that, comes a Canadian tradition of sorts. Our famous coffee franchise Tim Horton's, usually does some kind of collectible promotion and this year they've gone back to....You guessed it...Hockey cards!

Here's the funny thing, I'm not even a huge hockey fan but the 'addiction' of opening packs and seeing if I can find one of those super rare cards has now become a little bit of a hobby for me LOL

IMG_3658.jpeg

For around $1 (with the purchase of a fantastic Tim Horton's coffee of course lol) I get a pack of 3 cards.

And ta-da, you guessed it, I absolutely love the thrill of the chase even if it's a physical card and not our glorious NFT versions on Splinterlands.

So much so that I've even purchased the storage binder to house all the cards I've ben collecting LOL

IMG_3659.jpeg

It's so much fun and it really does bring me back to my childhood!

Are these cards worth much? Nah, I doubt it. And even the most rare cards they are printing are peanuts compared to that Prince Julian card that just sold for $50,000 here on Splinterlands LOL

However, it makes you wonder....What kind of market would there be for a physical version of the cards in this game?

I know the company that owns Splinterlands itself has stated in the past they have no intention of getting into the print business as they are a digital company however I know how much I treasure these little babies I've got as well...

IMG_3660.jpeg

Hey, one could wish and dream :)

Until then....

I'm looking forward to opening up a bunch of Chaos Legion packs and chasing after those gold foil legendaries ;)

I've got a few of those physical promo cards too. I actually used one of the promo codes to start a friends account a few weeks back... The codes still work! Surprisingly, I found mine behind my dresser when I was cleaning. I had forgotten all about them. They just so happened to reappear when I needed them!

I never got in the card collecting circles IRL. I'm enjoying Splinterlands a lot though. Fun game and the gains were a really pleasant surprise!

I can't believe you guys get hockey cards at your Tim's. I was just at a Tim's on our side of the border and I don't remember seeing any hockey card promotions :( I have a few family members that collect sports cards too!

Cheers bro!

LOL Man, if they could put ice inside of these Tim's stores and have people skate around to order coffee they would lol

Canadians lol

Lol those card binders take me way back. I'm terrible at keeping things organized so very happy everything is digital now.

0.00557967 BEE

Yeah, when I bought the binder I told myself...I'm in deep now lol

It's so crazy to me. If you had said I'd be a card collector at this age, I would have laughed you out the room.. :) AND HERE I AM!!!.. Can't get enough of them! :)

Looks like another whale in Splinterlands for the making. Are you planning on just renting them out and earning off that income?

I do a little of both right now. I play with my cards but also rent out a good chunk of them.

You definatley spoke to my collector inner child. I have not bought a pack of Hockey cards in forever. Hey will you ever do a Hockey sports show?
When I bought those two cards yesterday, it felt right, my collector instict was on fire, and my practical mind wants to smack me around for waiting so long. I am trying to get my wife to go through the hive guide, I think she will love this.
P.S. I actually won 1 battle in the Frey, so that is 100% than the last one. Better and better everyday is my goal.

I'm so happy for you, I have starting buying some Pokemon cards recently just a few packs might get other cards I mean the physical cards so need to look on YouTube for ideas !

0.00553237 BEE

The physical cards are so cool too...But I am partial to the digital NFTs lol

0E-8 BEE

Looking at your cards just reminded me I need to head to my parents place to look for my old NBA cards if they are still around. Wonder how much my Larry Bird and and Magic Johnson cards are worth now....

0.00552447 BEE

Oh wow...A nice sum I'm sure!!!

0E-8 BEE

I've never been into this kind of collecting, but I love watching the passion with which people are enjoying this game. I am totally surprised that this is turning out to be the killer app that's bringing Hive to the masses, and I'm loving it. Only up from here!

0.00553899 BEE

It's so awesome.

Everything about it has been such a blast!

0E-8 BEE

Printer cards could bridge the digital world with the real one. There is a lot on their plate, but they could externalize this process and making a killing out of it. Who wouldn't love to see those fearless monsters in their hands...?

0.00499052 BEE

I would pay for the physical versions for sure lolol

0E-8 BEE

Yeah Jon, it's fun and exciting! I never thought I be actually playing this type of card game. I've played a little poker & blackjack and even uno or go fish with the kids. I have collected some sports cards and such but not on a real level. I used love to get cards like in the cereal box or some thing like that. I once collected some cards called 'Bella, they were of horses and at one point I know some of them were worth a nice piece of change. I still have those cards and some unopened packs from where I started to loose the fever.

As for Splinterlands, I wish I could get like 50 or 100 packs. Boy that would be sweet. But at least I figure I'll be able to get 4 or 5 packs thanks to #INDEX and maybe I'll end up with a legendary or gold foil, that would maake me estatic.

This is so exciting! Can't wait to see what you get!

That's literally what got me hooked lol I opened a few packs and BAM...A gold foil legendary.

Changed my life lol I mean, it's blind luck...But it's always gonna be worth something, even those rare and epic cards...It starts to stack up!

0.06378751 BEE

Opening packs is so addictive! I got into Splinterlands much later than you, so I was only able to buy packs from Hive Engine.

There were few times when I had an itch to open a pack and bought pricey Untamed packs from HE. It's just so hard to resist buying second-hand packs despite the impractical side of it 😅

0.00470093 BEE

That's how I bought the majority of my packs...before the hype, I was buying Untamed for like 2-3 HIVE per pack...And Hive was only about 30-40 cents back then lol

The good ol' days (less than a year ago lolol)

0E-8 BEE

It sounds so much fun to be able to buy Untamed for $1.2 per pack. I'm one of the people who joined Splinterlands during the hype. 😅

I'm really happy for you. There are different types of people here, those who like physical cards and those who prefer digital cards. Gradually I think that mentalities will evolve towards more digital for certain non-essential objects and nostalgic ones will keep physical objects. On the point Digital / Non-digital depending on the utility, will another debate open that of eco-responsible?

0.00487166 BEE

Really good book I read about that cycle called The Revenge of Analog by David Sax. Fantastic exploration on the digital vs physical

0E-8 BEE

I wonder how many people would love to have a physical copy of the Splinterlands cards. This could be a huge untapped market!

0.00493603 BEE

I reckon they can go back to front and go from NFT game to physical card game. A little cross promotion here and there. All about licensing the rights ;)

0E-8 BEE

They gave them out a LOT when 'Steem Monsters' was launching. That's how I got mine, being at some offline events where it was being promoted.

0E-8 BEE

Are those printed cards from Warsaw? Cool, a printed gold foil Gold Dragon. :)

0.00478719 BEE

I got one in Poland and I got one in Toronto at a 'Steem Creators' seminar I took part in.

Collecting cards is so addictive! I've been building my Magic the Gathering collectin for the last 15 years, and now I'm here, building my digital collection of Splinterlands cards!

I actually saw a Magic pack in the local store here...Was thinking of buying one, just to see what the hype is lol

0E-8 BEE

Magic is a full-fledged, complex and slow card game; if that's your thing, you'll love it. It has decades of cards with unique mechanics and rules, and you can spend a whole year reading about the game and there will be still plenty of stuff to learn.

MtG is so traditional and huge that it became "the game" to be beaten in the Collectible Card Game market, much like World of Warcraft became "the game" to be beaten in the MMORPG market.

But the truth is that it doesn't have to be beaten; there's enough players for different games in the same niche. Gods Unchained, for example, is SO similar to MtG that it's obvious that it's just trying to mimic (and beat) it... is this needed? I don't think so.

Splinterlands, in the other hand, tried something different, and created a more-casual, more newbie-friendly game that's (way) faster to play and simple enough to be played on mobile phones. It's still a collectible card game, but it has its own ideas and game mechanics.

0.00003352 BEE

And it is fun watching you open your packs. A vicarious thrill. It's like a little bit of Christmas everyday. Thanks for giving me ideas for other Splinterlands people to follow. I already follow @bulldog1205. So happy to be into this even it is just through Index.

Lots of awesome creators for Splinterlands content, I'd recommend these off the top of my head:

@mawit07
@rosiew
@revise.spt
@libertycrypto27
@clove71

Just a few of the dozens and dozens of awesome creators.

Like you, I started my card collection with Splinterlands and had never tried a game like this before.
I have 20 packs of Untamed cards but I'm not sure if I should open them or sell them to buy the Chaos Legion packs when they cost 4$...

Yeah thats a tough one. I really SHOULD keep Chaos packs for future returns, but I dunno if I can hold off opening them lol

What sucks is I don't have enough Vouchers to make enough purchases. But it sure is fascinating how you have to spend $15 - $17 to get access to buy a pack that's only $4.

You dont have to, you can always buy the CHAOS right off hive engine for example and not need voucher for the purchase.

This is all done to keep the whales from buying every single card pack out there.
