I am also in support of the move to season-long rentals. The pros far outweigh the cons.
One thing you don't mention is that this change might influence people to prioritize buying cards instead of renting them, which is a huge win!

It is true but for small or new players who struggle just to rent for a whole season, the chances of buying the cards, especially the expensive ones will be much more difficult.

Renting for a brawl, tournament, or weekend, is just not good business for the game. Seasonal rentals still aren't that big of a commitment. If people quit over these changes, then they didn't really love the game, just the profits.
