Noite de Halloween [PT-BR/EN]

Noite passada foi Halloween, uma festa celebrada em muitos países, mas até pouco tempo atrás nunca era celebrada no Brasil. Hoje em dia o Halloween ja é celebrado no Brasil, mas ainda não chega aos pés de como é celebrado aqui nos EUA.

Na noite de Halloween todo mundo sai para a rua, para bater de porta em porta nas casas e pedir balas e doces. Isso lembra um pouco São Cosme e Damião, mas a diferença é que é uma celebração dos mortos, e as pessoas de fantasiam com roupas e acessórios assustadores. Eu não consigo imaginar como seria celebrar o Halloween no Rio de Janeiro, especialmente no bairro onde cresci. Lá só tem prédios grandes, e por causa da violência, todos são cercados por grades, como seria possível bater de porta em porta assim? Muita gente poderia até pensar que é um assalto. Pelo que sei, no Brasil só se celebra o Halloween em festas fechadas.

Ontem saímos pelas ruas com um grupo de amigos do meu filho mais novo. Nós combinamos de nos encontrar na casa de um deles, e de lá fomos caminhar e bater de porta em porta. No caminho ja ouvi o pessoal falando sobre a casa dos piratas, as crianças super animadas de ir até lá, e fiquei curioso, principalmente por que eles disseram que a cada ano a casa fica mais enfeitada e atrai cada vez mais gente. Aqui existe um costume de enfeitar a casa no Halloween e no Natal, muita gente participa, mas alguns levam isso muito a sério. Algumas ruas os moradores combinam de enfeitar todas as casas e a rua, e viram uma grande atração, a única ocasião no Brasil que se assemelha é em época de copa do mundo, quando as ruas se enfeitam.

Fomos caminhando em direção a casa dos piratas, e antes mesmo de chegar na casa, eu ja conseguia ouvir os canhões dos piratas sendo disparados. Quando chegamos na cada dos piratas eu não acreditei na produção que eu vi, também não acreditei que moro aqui nesse bairro a 6 anos e nunca tinha passado por lá. Ano passado caminhamos até bem perto, mas não chegamos até lá. A casa tem um tour pelo jardim, e tinha uma fila enorme de pessoas esperando para entrar. Os moradores organizam tudo com bastante antecedência, e tem varios voluntários que ajudam na organização. Realmente essa casa virou a grande atração do bairro. Espero que as fotos possam dar a dimensão dessa produção toda.

Last night was Halloween, a holiday celebrated in many countries, but until recently it was never celebrated in Brazil. Nowadays Halloween is celebrated in Brazil, but it still doesn't reach the heights of what is celebrated here in the USA.

On Halloween night, everyone goes out to the streets to knock on doors and ask for candies and sweets. It's a bit reminiscent of the day of Saints Cosme e Damião in Brazil, but the difference is that it's a celebration of the dead, and people dress up in scary clothes and accessories. I can't imagine what it would be like to celebrate Halloween in Rio de Janeiro (my hometown), especially in the neighborhood where I grew up. There are only big apartment buildings there, and because of the violence, they are all surrounded by bars, so how would it be possible to knock on doors like that? Many people might even think it's a robbery. As far as I know, Halloween is only celebrated at closed parties in Brazil.

Yesterday we went out on the streets with a group of my youngest son's friends. We agreed to meet at one of their houses, and from there we went for a walk and knocked on doors. On the way I overheard people talking about the pirate house, the children were very excited to go there, and I was curious, especially because they said that every year the house gets more decorated and attracts more people. Here there is a tradition of decorating the house for Halloween and Christmas, many people participate, but some take it very seriously. In some streets, the residents arrange to decorate all the houses and the street, and it becomes a big attraction. The only time in Brazil that is similar is during the World Cup, when the streets are decorated.

We walked towards the pirates house, and even before we reached it, I could hear the pirates cannons being fired. When we arrived at the pirates house, I couldn't believe the production I'd seen. I also couldn't believe that I'd lived in this neighborhood for six years and had never been there. Last year we walked quite close, but we didn't get there. The house has a garden tour, and there was a huge line of people waiting to get in. The residents organize everything well in advance, and there are several volunteers who help with the organization. This house has really become the neighborhood's big attraction. I hope the photos give you an idea of the scale of the production.
