Introvert Talks - AI And The Middle Finger

"Introvert Talks" is meant to be a new initiative or theme, where I myself as an introvert, just talk about reflections and thoughts about my life, or maybe share more personal stuff. :)

This is my weekly post under this "Introvert Talks" theme and let's see where it takes me and us.

Sometimes, we don't truly appreciate the value of technology until it helps us in a moment when we least expect it.

So the clumsy me actually scalded myself with boiling water yesterday. Or more specifically, the hot boiling water landed on my middle finger. And for once, I really thought AI played such an important role in what happened after that.

I wanted to make some tea, and just like what I would do usually, after the water boiled, I would hold the kettle using my left hand, and my right hand would be holding the cup, and for the first time since x years, I didn't aim properly, and a splash of the boiled water landed on my right hand with most of it on my middle finger. Ouch.

Fortunately, I still faintly recall some first aid knowledge that I studied during my schooling days, and in pain, I quickly put my middle finger under cool running water from the tap. I had very minor burns before in my life, so I was naturally worried how it would affect the skin/recovery etc, and while my finger was under the running water, I managed to reach out to my phone and asked ChatGPT what I should do, just to see if I was doing things right. It was a long list of do's and don'ts, but at least I knew I had to keep the water running for 20 minutes.

Since I was just standing at the tap, I asked what I should observe after the 20 minutes and it was helpful that they really gave me a helpful description.

I even sent a photo of my fingers for them to assess. And fortunately, it wasn't bad as I thought.

But before I knew it, I hit the cap of my free quota. So I had to switch to Gemini. And this was their assessment of my fingers photo, which was reassuring as well.

And because I was still worried, after 40 minutes, I took a photo and sent them to take a look.

And finally, this morning, I sent a final photo, and they gave me an all clear! And it was consistent to what I was feeling too. No more pain and maybe just dryness on the skin.

Through this episode, I was really grateful that I had AI to seek generic knowledge to supplement my basic first aid knowledge. In such emergency situations, it was impossible to call a friend and visit a doctor, and the quick responses allowed me to take action quickly to minimise any serious damage. Whether it was pure luck or not, I would think AI played a huge role yesterday in ensuring that my finger came out without any major damage from the scald. And this made me reflect on the value add of AI and technology in our lives, when used in the right circumstances.

funny that the free quota ran out mid emergency and you had to switch to Gemini for the second opinion. glad you kept it under the tap the full 20 minutes, that's the part most people cut short
