To help out society ; Help the teacher to help the child.
Most times I think some parents are the major reason why their children get dull in school or decline academically. Because the culture of over pampering a child even to the extent of making them see the teachers assignment as a punishment is getting things worse.
The other day, I posted a picture that talks about a partner should try to help their kids or assist them do some assignments especially in mathematics. And I got a response from someone and she said, that no teacher should try that with his kid. I read her response again and what that response meant to me was that " no teacher should give her child any assignment, if you must give make sure that you will do it for the child " . I had to stop typing, she called and we spoke on phone . And what she said was funny. In her own words, " after paying for my child's school fees and you send an assignment again for me to do or help the child do ". She added, okay what happen some days that I return home late ?
I laughed and told her , that's not anybody's business, because you pay your child school fees doesn't mean that the teacher should finish doing the teaching, give assignment and still returned back to do the assignment for the child. I made her know that assignment is part of the learning and that no teacher gives a child assignment / home work as a form of punishment.
📌 Most of the times assignment is given to help the child go back home study what was taught in class and use it to do the assignment, because some of the questions given by teachers as an assignment is what was taught in class. So giving them such and assignment will help them go back home , review/ study what they learnt, then use it to do the assignment.
📌 Assignment is also given to help the child do some findings / research independently ( inquiry method ) , then come back with their findings and from there corrections will be made, more explanation will be done base on their findings and the teacher will build on what they already know. Inquiry method is one teaching method that helps a child learn independently and it help the child understand a particular concept more better, because he or she made the findings with little or no assistance.
📌Again, assignment can be given as a form of evaluation and assessment to help the teacher check the level of understanding about what was taught and where they have issues about a particular concept.
In summary, it is advisable that parents and care givers should assist their wards do their assignment and not necessarily doing it for them, guiding them is the key.
Parents should not see assignment / home work as punishment because in the education system, assignment is part of the teaching/learning process which is why it is advisable that every teacher should ensure that each lesson comes with an assignment for the learner.
