What a fool believes...

IMG_20200806_132803.jpg

In case you missed it, it's the first day of April and that date brings a lot of heavy baggage with it. Most importantly, it's April Fool's day, so we need to use those skills we have honed over the past five years and question pretty much everything we see or read today.

Secondly, it's Hive Power Up Day, so make sure you take a little bit of Hive today and roll it into your Hive Power. If you are a small enough account you might win some prizes. If you are a bigger account, you just get that warm fuzzy feeling of knowing you are growing something great here on Hive.

I did a little power up myself today.

April is also the "halving month", so we have that going on, plus, a week from today there is a pretty big celestial event happening too that you may or may not have heard about. I plan on covering that a bit more tomorrow.

Finally, another April marks the fact that we are officially about four years past what we probably didn't realize was the beginning of the Covid Pandemic. I may or may not remember correctly that it was right around this time four years ago that the rumors about 5G causing Covid were starting to pick up steam.

Believe it or not, 5G is actually the real reason I am writing this post. I was looking through my old photos trying to find a picture of a tower to fit the theme, but unfortunately, the photo of the lighthouse and watch tower was the closest thing I could find.

I think by now, we have fully accepted the fact that 5G cellular service didn't cause Covid. Right? Right? Since we can't be mad at 5G for that, how about we find a different reason to hate on it? Maybe because it absolutely sucks.

I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this? I think what frustrates me so much about 5G is the fact that I clearly have service, but the service itself just seems to blow donkey balls. I can be sitting in a location and have full bars of 5G service and I can't get a website to load to save my life.

The funny thing is, I can force my phone to connect at 4G LTE and everything works just fine. Faster in fact than my supposed "ultrafast high speed Internet". I know it all has to do with radio frequencies and bandwidth and all of those other fancy terms, but it's just annoying when things don't work the way they are supposed to.

When I travel down to Ohio, I always have to switch my phone to 4G LTE to get Internet to work around the Columbus area. You would think in a city that big, they would have pretty decent coverage.

Again, that's what drives me crazy. I can have full bars of service and the phone just stalls. Silly me for believing that I should actually be able to use all the features of my smartphone when I have full bars of 5G!

I have no doubt it will get better over time, but it just baffles me how the experience can vary so much from area to area. I can sit in my house and get two bars of 5G and it works better than full bars in most other places.

Maybe it's just something with T-Mobile (my carrier), but they are supposed to have one of the largest 5G networks in the country, so you would think they might have their ducks in a row.

Maybe I should just be happy we aren't all still using 3G service for everything. Bad 5G service is still better than good 3G service right?

I'm curious, have you ever experienced what I talk about above? I'm not counting sporting events or other crowded areas where the radios might be at capacity due to the volume of users. I'm talking, just sitting around on the patio with full bars of 5G and it stalls. Have you tried changing your phone to use the older 4G service? Does that fix things for you?

Please tell me it isn't just me!

From what I have read, April could be a wild month for us. Be careful out there and especially today, listen to The Who and don't let yourself get fooled.

Or perhaps a little Doobie Brothers:

I powered up too.

I don't use too much mobile data, so I don't tend to notice how good it is. I think coverage is generally fairly good here, but there's some issue with my phone where it seems to lose the connection.

Those people blaming 5G for COVID are just nutters. Did you have them destroying masts? This whole distrust in any authority is out of control.

I never heard of any people vandalizing towers here, but that doesn't mean it wasn't happening. I have a feeling most people that believed that wouldn't even know what a 5G tower looked like. They are supposed to be quite different from the older ones and they cover shorter distances.

I remember reading once that the cell companies lie in the US. I mean lie lie lie. Even when the signal isn't very good, they display 5G and all the bars. I've never looked into it, but that does kind of match my experience. I'll only have one bar in Japan and have this super fast, instant load on anything, then in the States I can have four bars and nothing loads.

Someday I hope for some regulation in the US to control these phone companies and make them actually serve the people instead of the shareholders while screwing the people, but I don't expect that day anytime soon.

In Japan we are down to three phone companies, so it is getting to the US level. But at least right now they still mostly follow gov regulations and provide pretty good service (but not as good as in South Korea, I read)

Very interesting. I had never heard that before, but I wouldn't doubt it at all! They are going to do whatever they can to keep the money coming into their pockets. I'd almost rather they crack down on the cable companies first though, then tackle the cellular carriers.

I work all over the place and complain about my phone with full bars not loading shit constantly. Everyone says it’s in my mind. Well either the two of us are crazy or geniuses. I’ll take the later….😎

I'll take the later as well! It's pretty sad that this is such a widespread issue.

I have Verizon and it's not really any better. 5G just sucks, period. LTE works just fine or better and especially in more heavily populated areas it seems.

Interesting! I'm glad to know it isn't just me and not just T-Mobile.

No, it's definitely not just you.

I really don't notice the speeds they claim you get with 5G. It only seems maybe 10% faster than LTE when it works.

Please what is the hive power up about , can one power down anytime they wish . And yes most certainly the 5G is definitely not the course of covid. But then 4G still seems better and comfortable

Why would you want to power down? That's like killing the goose that lays the golden egg! The first of every month many of us celebrate HPUD by powering up an extra amount of Hive to our accounts.

I can't believe on my brand new cell phone with full bars of 5G I cannot get internet connection anywhere. I had this years ago with my £57 end of line SONY galaxy. Nothing's moved in a decade and a new phone?

I don't think we've fully come to terms with Covid in the UK. It's changed something, or maybe it's just me, but like 5G, it feels broken. We don't seem to acknowledge it here, like it's done and dusted (although, to be sure, we have plenty of other problems).

0.00036955 BEE

I don't think it's just in the UK. Many people here have moved on and they are just kind of ignoring everything that it left in its wake. I know what you mean about something just being "off". I can feel it too from time to time.

Verizon is just as bad. I’ve had Sprint which was even worse. All the cell carriers I ever have had saw major connection issues in large cities or big crowds like at college sports events. I know some peoples phones work or must work if they live in the area but I can never seem to figure it out.

0.00036937 BEE

Yeah, it's just pretty horrible. At least be honest with me in terms of signal. If I am only going to get a slow speed, then make my bars reflect that. It's false advertising almost.

0E-8 BEE

It kind of is false advertising. I have been saying that for year.

It is funny but I always found the States to be way behind the UK on mobile/cell phones and data coverage and prices.

Some people would do anything, so destroying masts I am sure they did. Some people will punch their own head until it bleeds if they are told to.

0.00037006 BEE

Maybe because we have so much more area to cover? :)

0E-8 BEE

For the coverage yes, but the pricing of plans and things no. One of the few areas that the UK is ahead. Whenever we talk to Mrs T's family we despair for them 🤣

0.00024663 BEE

We haven’t even started to experience 5G network here though
How’s it over there?

0.00024475 BEE

Frustrating. If you have solid 4G, you are probably better off.

0E-8 BEE

Great post! Glad you have the 5G experience now. It's weird how it works better in some places than others isn't it?

0.00024736 BEE

It's so weird and disappointing all at the same time. I'm not really that impressed on any of the phones I have owned.

0E-8 BEE

Well they are not actually concerned about the final consumer but just to fill the pocket
