An Ounce of Prevention

PXL_20251006_103416480.jpg

Even if you don't have kids (like me), you can probably appreciate just how messy they are. Along with the bodily fluids, there is all the dirt, grime, and other stuff they carry around with them from rolling on the ground, or touching everything they come into contact with. Admit it, you were a kid once and this probably rings quite true for you.

If you know someone who works in education, I challenge you to ask them if they remember when they first started working in the schools. Then ask them if they remember getting sick shortly after they started. Like super sick. Maybe sicker than they have ever been in their entire life.

You might get a few who deny it, but my guess is, there are a large number of people who will know what I am talking about. Think about it for a second. You are a regular person, minding your own business, living your life. Sure you got a little crazy in university and drank some weird stuff and slept in some funky places, but you were still relatively safe. Now you find yourself in a virtual petri dish of just about every virus and bacteria imaginable all waiting for the chance to meet your immune system and knock you on your butt.

I can still remember parts of my first major illness when I started working at the schools. Actually, I got to experience it twice because after about four years with one school district I started working at another school district and I got introduced to a whole new round of germs.

The second time stands out more to me. I remember being in a fever induced haze, freezing to death, but also sweating like a beast. I was practically delirious trying to sleep with the radio on and I remember this same song kept playing over and over again. To this day, when I hear "Bring On The Rain" by Jo Dee Messina, it still takes me back to that time in my life.

I remember I was living alone with a mattress on box spring on the floor because I didn't have a bed frame, a Maryland state flag hanging on my wall (because I thought it looked cool), and a whole lot of home decor I now regret wasting the money on from Pier 1 Imports.

Over the years, @mrsbozz and I have had our fair share of illnesses most likely related to work. There was a time when she had strep something like four times in one year, but I think part of that had to do with our old house and the possible presence of some black mold or something. Once we moved to our new house and she got her allergies sort of under control, her immune system really stepped up.

That isn't to say we don't still get sick, but it's far less common that it used to be. Then Covid came along and with a renewed sense of purpose, we have been even more diligent about avoiding germs. There is still debate whether that is a good thing or a bad thing.

Over the years, we have come to appreciate the Airborne line of products. Sure, it might just be a placebo effect, but if we start feeling a little scratch in our throat or a little stuffy, we often take an Airborne as a precautionary measure.

More recently, @mrsbozz was talking to a lady we work with and it came out that her daughter makes and sells Elderberry Syrup at a little stand just around the corner from our house. As we were on our way home the other day, we swung by the Red Shed, used Venmo to pay $7.00 USD and we were on our way home with a 4 oz bottle of Elderberry Syrup.

According to Google... Elderberry is known to contain antioxidants as well as vitamins A and C. These are believed to strengthen your immune system and fight off infections. There are studies which suggest Elderberry can reduce the "duration and severity" of cold and flu infections.

Elderberries are also show to improve digestive health, reduce inflammation, support heart health, and in some cases aids in weight management.

There are also a number of relatively benign or cosmetic things that Elderberry is believed to help, but I will let you read about those yourself if you really care.

The little bottle we got came with an eye dropper so you can simply put a few drops of the syrup on your tongue or put a few drops in your tea or whatever. I don't know about my wife, but I have only taken one dose so far. I guess time will tell if this really works the way that we hope it will.

I know there are a lot of cures to common stuff in nature, so I am more than willing to give it a try. We are getting to the time of year when the cold and flu is most active, so I might be putting it to the test sooner rather than later!

Elderberry is amazing

Elderberry is very good for you. I’m not one to get sick at all. I take tons of vitamins and supplements daily, probably more than I really need to. But my immune system is like a tank. I’ve been around my mom with bronchitis, sinus infections, etc. same with my girlfriend and her family. I just don’t get sick. It’s gotta be over a decade atleast since I’ve been sick. I say it’s the vitamins and stuff I take. Plus I eat a pretty healthy lifestyle for the most part anyway. I’m doing physical labor all day long and lift three to four times a week. Guess that’s my edge.

Sounds like you have a good plan. It's pretty rare that I get sick myself. At least compared to my wife, but she has some allergy stuff going on that brings her immune system down quite frequently.

Elderberry wine is pretty popular and I threaten to make some every year I see the berries! The cough syrup looks a good idea, and that is great supporting a local business too so to speak.

Yeah, we were happy to give her our money. They are a good family and it's great that she is doing her side hustle like this. We will see if it actually works!

hehe fingers crossed it works, you do take more than I thought. I think of syrups and have a tablespoon or two.

We bought it, so I don't really know the recipe. I am guessing there are plenty online though.

Elderberry works wonders! We found it in Amsterdam in 2016. I caught the flu on the plane over for SteemFest. It's a good as a preventative during cold/flu season and great to shorten illnesses when you're already sick. I also use this grapefruit seed extract nasal spray before/after I fly or am exposed to a sick person. They say if you flush out your nasal cavities with this no more than three hours after exposure you can sometimes prevent yourself from getting sick.

Oh wow, that is cool. I have never heard of that for your nose before. I have some flonase I use every now and then, but nothing really organic. We are going to give the elderberry syrup a go this winter and see how it works out for us.

It's not just working in schools. Parents are warned (at least here) that as soon as your kids start at preschool, within a few weeks you will get sicker than you've ever been. We learn that this repeats to some degree at the beginning of every school year, at least for their first few years.

Ah yeah, I guess that makes a bit of sense. Those little germ factories tend to get their hands everywhere!

Elderberry is a great fruit and source of antioxidants. As are blueberries for that mater! I firmly believe that in the end you are what you eat, and if you are taking in enough healthy fruits you will be less prone to inflammation. The added benefit is a better immune system. So keep it up! Some of the other ingredients in there are good too, all very anti-inflammatory, looks like the Mrs. found a nice local product!

I feel you! Me and my wife worked for four years remotely and we never would get sick, except when our daughter goes to school, then everyone is sick every other week.
