Heat is Talking

It is officially summer in my country. There are still several weeks left before I’m really authorized to say that phrase, but the sun and the temperature don’t lie. Could it be climate change? I think so, or maybe it’s just that as an adult I’ve never paid attention to the signs of the beginning of the seasons.

As a child it was easier, since school and its vacation periods reminded me that winter or summer had begun. Now, with work and household duties, what I notice instead is when Friday arrives and when Monday begins.

We can’t really say that Cuba has autumn and spring, because summer dominates, and when the season of cold fronts begins, we know it’s winter. But the official summer is felt when the heat is unbearable and the wind barely shows up.

I can only say that this year is flying by. Just yesterday it was January and now we’re almost in June. A whole semester gone. There’s a lot of tension in the world. The threats of war and war itself have stood out in 2026 so far. I think that’s what has made us lose track of time. We want to get out of those conflicts as quickly as possible.

In my case, or rather in the Cuban case, I think we’ve already adapted to time moving faster. People age more quickly. The main thought among young people is that they have to get out of here no matter what. Therefore, those of us who stay will increase the number of elderly people living alone and without quality of life.

It’s good that we have a high life expectancy. But a miserable life even if it lasts 100 years? No, thanks. It’s better to keep reading books and informing ourselves about how we can do better. That way, when I’m old I’ll be able to live better, as I wish, and as I prepared myself for that moment. I’m almost 30 years old, but at this pace I’ll reach 60 at any moment (if I make it).

I really liked your reflection, my dear friend, and I very much agree with the things you shared with us. I remembered the poem by Jorge Luis Borges that begins by saying (I’ll write it in english although it is an excellent poem written in spanish): 'Old age, such is the name that others give it, may be the time of our happiness…' But I completely agree with you that it should be an old age with quality of life. Of course, the most important thing is not to live many years but to live them with quality of life—and very importantly!!! In a world where peace and love prevail.

Thanks pal. Jorge Luis Borges is one of the authors I'll been looking his legacy for.
