Being Hacked Sucks! .:. WorkerBee PH-Pool Week 239
This time, I will be very short... The story begins 48 hours ago, when I received the email that the new user had registered as an owner of my website on Google Search Console! I checked it, and there were no additional users, so I didn't pay too much attention...
The next wake-up call happened right after I made this great photo yesterday morning, on my early walk by the sea... A friend of mine sent me a message saying his website doesn't work (hosted on my machine)... As I had only a mobile phone, I checked the machine and saw a heavy load, which slowed down everything...

Long story short, some of the hosted websites got hacked... It wasn't the first time in 20+ years of my hosting journey, but every time, it's annoying to experience it... The reason why and how hackers did it isn't always clear, but in 99% of cases, it's because of an old/outdated script, a WordPress version from 2005, very weak passwords, etc.
What looked at the beginning as a small issue with 1 website turned out to be multiple, different cases of hacking with malware scripts in the end... After 48 hours of intensive work, the machine is cleaned, and things are getting back to normal...
Just a reminder for hackers... Hacking websites is a crime, at the same level as robbing a property or a house... You can try to hide your trail, but many times, it is possible to track the intruder... Hacking is not a game, and it costs people time and money...
Now excuse me, but I have to take a rest...

Nothing worse getting had by a scammer or wasting your time with them. I have noticed in the last 20 years its only gotten worse. I know they have made online dating impossible basically. Well they have made a lot of waves in basically any way imaginable. Well hope you dont have to deal with it anytime soon.
Well, the story didn't finish yesterday, and it continued today... I have to admit that I stress too much, and usually, when I snap, I do the right thing... I suppose these things move us out of the comfort zone, which is a good thing...
As a marketing company, this is why I try not to toy with hosting or even Wordpress for that matter. Knowing the skill to code a business website starts at $5000 per website, the hosting is priced at a premium, maintenance (plug ins, patches, backups and new content pains) needs to happen and Wordpress is the windows of hacking on website platforms. My guys have been working with Google sites because they are easy to configure, live on Google servers which are indexed first, backup is automatic and hosting is free. Less functionality but good for small business.
Anyhow, it took a few days to undeligate my bee tokens, and now I am stuck waiting for the power down to happen slowly before I can swap. What a pain in the ass! Once it is done, I will finally be in on the worker bee initiative properly! ;)
That's true... The thing is that I had (and still have) a couple of clients that need speed, space, bandwidth... and guess what... They aren't too keen to pay premium for that... lol... So, I suppose I know my next move... lol...
Yeah, it takes time to undelegate and unstake... :(
Thanks for the report. Yes, that's true, one of the reasons why I gave up web hosting (even for friends) was mainly because, as an individual, I couldn't compete with larger companies that had paid support, I mean, they had people who only dealt with that. It takes a lot of time, which I didn't have that much of.
But, hey, soon I'll have another workerbee that I'll invest in :)
I'm an idiot... At the moment, I'm doing it ONLY for my friends, and you know how that goes... It takes a lot of time (in this kind of situation), which can't be paid enough... aka... doing it for free

Exactly. But the situation has also changed. A website is no longer a necessity; only serious businesses need one. For everyone else, there are social networks and their almost completely automated offerings. You still have to work, but on some cloud infrastructure.
Bastards! I'm sorry to hear that you've had problems, I see you're gone these days, but I didn't assume it was something like that. I remember the hack arcangel was talking about and his effort to recover everything... And I know how many problems with hackers have colleagues in the company who deal with security, daily attacks...
As I don't have a huge number of clients, I don't encounter these issues frequently. However, when they do happen, they take up a significant amount of my time... And that sucks big time...
Anyway, I learned something new and will adapt... :)

Oops! Spending 48 hours of intensive work to get everything back to normal is quite an ordeal. Some hackers do think it's a game lol, as I can't understand what better things they could do with their time instead of engaging in hacking systems.
I do understand (in some way) when people are hacking for money, but what happened on my machine was worth almost 0 for them... but a lot of work for me to clean the mess up...
Ah, complete absurdity on their part, like retards who have nothing better to do with their lives. Hopefully this wouldn't occur again and you continue running your business!
It is really sad that hackers believe they can mess with people's lives like this. However, your commitment to fixing the problem is truly motivating 😉

Oh yea WordPress is quite weak, you should add some security restrictions on what is hosted on your servers
Anything that involves tech is a "moving target"... There are always some new things, new ways to hack, and old scripts to be exploited...
Anyway, the battle continues... 😃
As I see now some mates and colleagues try to add notifications if something happen with their VPS or sites. But as time shows it is not always panacea and not always alerts that you need to pay attention on your site or machine.
It's like in old cartoons... You patch one hole and the water starts to come from another one... 😀

I doubt that the IP address I found is a genuine one and not a VPN, or some other hacked machine.

Can't understand why people hack someone's account. I'm glad you got it sorted.
Usually, it is for some monetary benefit... In this case, it was the same, but the hacker didn't profit at all... he just made damage... :(
