Bart Simpson Everywhere! .:. WorkerBee PH-Pool Week 255
I recall my first crypto bear market, which occurred in 2018... In early 2017, I came back to crypto by mining ETH heavily... I was slowly learning about crypto, but I made so many mistakes in my first year... Bought dozens of "promising" coins and tokens with my ETH earnings... HODLing a bunch of shitcoins during the bear market isn't fun at all... Luckily, I have exchanged some ETH in BTC too, so it wasn't all wasted... However, in 2018, Bitcoin dropped by almost 85% over the 365 days of the bear market!!! It was devastating... (Imagine how much those shitcoins went down... š spoiler alert: some went to zero)

Partly because of the crypto markets, partly because of some personal stupidities that I did in those days, that year was probably one of the worst years of my life... That crypto drop was so straight down, almost like the HIVE chart today... š As it was my first bear, and still early days of crypto, the real question that everyone had was... "Will BTC go to zero, and is this crypto thing just a big scam?"
The pointing finger shows the price when my friend got into crypto... š Despite buying that "local" top, he would be now 5x!
Luckily, today we don't hear that question anymore... at least I didn't hear it for a long time, and tbh, I have zero doubts about crypto... But, we have completely different issues today than we had back in 2018... We had greedy people, even in BTC in 2018, but today, we have greedy people with a lot of money... š That's one of the reasons for the first chart/image/screenshot that you can see, those "Bart Simpson" chart formations repeating over and over again...
In 2017-2018, we had dozens, maybe hundreds of altcoins, not more... And many of them had marketcap under 1M, maybe a couple of thousands of USD, which made them perfect for "pump-and-dump" schemes... People would join in groups, pick a token, decide to buy it in a short period of time (less than a minute), and trigger regular users to FOMO and join the party... When the price pumps, they would dump their tokens and walk away... That was possible to do only for low market cap tokens, as you didn't need to have a lot of money to move the price...
We saw something similar happening on HIVE a few years ago when Koreans would do it on Upbit exchange, and even this yesterday pump looks similar to that, but with not that big a percentage... But, to see something similar happening on Bitcoin, I wouldn't believe it if it wasn't an often-occurring lately... I do understand that we can have some selling pressure, but the Bart Simpson chart is ridiculous...
We wanted to see big players in BTC, and we got them... Probably, the price couldn't go up so much without them, but we forgot that they also can play dirty, as long as they can... I can't believe that I will say this, but I hope we will get some regulations in crypto trading, at least for Bitcoin, as this is getting ridiculous...
What if BTC is already "destroyed" by these big boys? What if they poisoned the chain and killed the purpose of Satoshi's vision? Well, Pandora's box is open, and we will always have some other alternatives and change our path...

Those early days were indeed hard, particularly with all the pump-and-dump schemes happening. The ups and downs of Bitcoin now seem strangely familiar.
I didn't check percentages of those drop-downs in the past, so when I saw this 85% for BTC, it was a big surprise... Now I understand why it hurt so much when it dropped... lol... š

Last night's pump was pretty good, in my opinion. The only problem is that the price isn't back to its old levels. When Hive was at 30 cents, a 30% pump would bring it to 40 cents. Now, a 30% increase brings it to 12 cents. There's definitely a lot of manipulation in crypto. Strange news is constantly being pumped into the market. When the data is good, the market should be good too, but there are always people who get caught off guard.
As there are more and more HIVE tokens out there, it will be harder and harder to push the price up, especially if we don't have anything shiny and new to offer... As long as there are people who are developing the chain, and the people in the community who care about this place, we have a chance to see better days...

The markets are a weird place, and the pumps/dumps just seem so manipulated (for the alt coins). I think BTC will be fine because I don't think the institutions have that much of it.

Definitely! I think we're in this in between phase with crypto as of late as where is it going next with the "big boys" entering this space and having their own set of ideas/plans on what this space should be. Part of me likes the sound of "tokenization of everything" via blockchains but I'm not sure what the catch is, those who enable the tokenization, serving as a bridge will accumulate unchecked power/influence.
Yeah, I have mixed feelings about upcoming things too... I remember the time when there was almost 0 leverage in crypto, only spot trading... In those days, one BTC maxi said that "big boys" will screw it all when the leverage trading becomes the thing, as they will not buy the REAL asset, but rather gamble on the price... As something like that happened, I suppose your doubts are also valid, and maybe we will get another "skewed" image of tokenization...
