OKPA THE FOOD THAT FEELS LIKE HOME 🇳🇬__WEEK 306

Hey Ladies 💛

For this week's prompt 2, I want to share something from my roots that makes me instantly homesick when I'm far.

Okpa.

If you're Igbo, you know. If you're not, let me gist you.

Okpa is not just food. It's identity.

We call it Okpa. English people call it Bambara nuts 😂 But for us it's Okpa.
The seeds are ground into smooth flour, then mixed with things that make it come alive.

How we make it - from my kitchen today

Ingredients:

  • Okpa seed - grinded to flour
  • Pepper
  • Salt
  • Palm oil
  • Warm water

Process:
Pic 1-3: First we pour the flour in a big bowl. Add palm oil. It turns that deep red color immediately. Then warm water.
Pic 4-6: We mix and mix until it's smooth. Add salt and pepper. The color becomes that bright yellow-orange we all know. No lumps o.
Pic 7-9: Scoop into nylon or banana leaves. Tie it properly.
Pic 10-12: Boil for hours. When it's done, it comes out solid, yellow, soft, and smelling like heaven.

Ready. Enjoy.

Why Okpa is special to us

Okpa is for everyone. Student, trader, driver, CEO.
For ₦300-₦500 you get full. It's our original "fast food" before Indomie came 😂

Anytime Food:
Morning: Okpa + pap/akamu
Afternoon: Okpa + cold zobo
Night: Okpa + evening ngwo
Rainy day: Hot okpa is medicine. The heat warms your body.

Okpa is full of protein. No wonder our grandmothers gave it to children and nursing mothers.
It fills you, gives you energy, and doesn't spoil easily.

But the best part?
That smell when someone opens banana leaf on the bus 😂
The yellow color from palm oil. The pepper that touches your tongue.
You don't eat okpa in a hurry. You unwrap it slowly and enjoy.

Okpa is mostly from Enugu and the East.
When you travel to Lagos or Abuja and see "Okpa Enugu" written on a pot, you know you're home.

That's my recipe for this week......
What's the one food from your country that reminds you of home? I'd love to try something new....❤️
